Advanced Open Water Certification in Florida Keys
You've got your Open Water cert under your belt, and now you're ready to push deeper into the underwater world of the Florida Keys. This 2-3 day Advanced Open Water course with abc fishing chatters 12 isn't just another certification – it's your ticket to exploring wrecks, mastering navigation, and diving with the confidence that comes from real experience. We're talking about five adventure dives across some of the best reef systems in the world, with an instructor who knows these waters like the back of their hand.
Beneath the Surface
The Florida Keys offer something most dive destinations can't match – crystal-clear water, healthy coral reefs, and dive sites that cater perfectly to advancing your skills. Over the course of three dive trips, you'll complete five adventure dives that build on each other. Two are mandatory: Deep Diving and Underwater Navigation. The deep dive takes you down to experience how nitrogen narcosis feels and how colors change at depth – essential knowledge for any serious diver. Navigation training happens on our shallow reefs where you'll master compass headings and natural navigation techniques using the reef structure itself. For your remaining three dives, we'll work with you to pick specialties that match conditions and your interests. Popular choices include Peak Performance Buoyancy (seriously game-changing for your air consumption), Fish Identification, Wreck Diving on our famous artificial reefs, Night Diving, and Drift Diving along the reef edge where the current brings in the big stuff.
Dive Brief & Gear Info
Your $530 investment covers eLearning modules you complete before arriving, plus all instruction and three dive trips. The eLearning portion walks you through theory for each adventure dive, so you spend maximum time underwater rather than in a classroom. We provide tanks and weights, but you'll want to bring your mask, fins, snorkel, and exposure protection – a 3mm wetsuit works year-round here, though you might want something thicker during winter months. The course starts with a skills review dive to make sure you're comfortable, then progresses through increasingly challenging scenarios. Each dive has specific learning objectives, but the real education happens when you're 60 feet down on a wreck, practicing perfect buoyancy while your instructor points out marine life you've never noticed before. We typically run morning and afternoon trips, with surface intervals at the shop where you can grab drinks and discuss what you just experienced.
Marine Life You'll See
The Florida Keys sit right in the Gulf Stream's path, creating an underwater highway for marine life that makes every dive different. Goliath grouper are the kings of our wrecks – these gentle giants can reach 800 pounds and aren't fazed by divers at all. They're most active during summer months when they gather to spawn, creating photo opportunities that'll make your friends back home jealous. You'll spot them hovering in the shadows of artificial reefs, completely motionless until they decide to glide past you like underwater buses. Nurse sharks cruise the sandy bottoms between coral heads, especially during your navigation dives. They're completely harmless and often rest under ledges during the day – perfect subjects for practicing your buoyancy while getting close-up photos. Barracuda form massive schools along the reef edge, creating silvery tornadoes that part as you swim through them. During drift dives, these schools can be so thick they block out the sun. Green moray eels peek out from crevices throughout the reef system, and once you learn to spot their telltale head movements, you'll see them everywhere. They're most active during night dives when they leave their holes to hunt, giving Advanced Open Water night divers front-row seats to some serious predator action.
Plan Your Next Dive
This course opens doors to dive sites and experiences that basic Open Water certification just can't access. The deep diving training alone expands your range to include our best wrecks, while navigation skills make you a more confident buddy on any dive trip. Most importantly, you'll finish with the experience and credentials to join advanced dive trips anywhere in the world. The Florida Keys provide the perfect training ground – challenging enough to push your skills, but forgiving enough to build confidence. Remember, we need 72 hours notice for cancellations, and if you're booking within two weeks, give the shop a call directly since weather and boat schedules change quickly down here. Your deposit covers the eLearning portion and isn't refundable, but it gets you started on coursework immediately. Ready to take that next step? The reef is waiting, and there's a whole underwater world beyond that 60-foot Open Water limit.
