Fish the legendary rivers of southern Vermont and Eastern NY with seasoned fly fishing guide, John Rogers. The area streams and rivers where home waters of Lee Wolfe, Charles Orvis and John Atherton to name just a few. Manchester, as your central hub, offers tons of wonderful hotels, restaurants and activities great for the entire family but if you're all about the fishing there's 6 diverse and equally wonderful steams where you can chase wild browns, hold over rainbows, or native brookies - with over 120 miles of river to choose from you're sure to have a blast. Wade fish or for the ultimate experience book John's drift boat and get to the untouched places and less pressured fish. Either way how can you go wrong in the valley's and streams of the Taconic and Green Mountain ranges.

About Your Vermont Fly Fishing Guide: Fly fishing is in John's blood - his father hailed from Western North Carolina with 3 generations of fly fisherman while his Mom was from Manhattan with a father who built a small cabin by hand on the banks of the Beaverkilll in upstate NY. John's first trout was taken at an early age on this famed NY river and he's brought several thousand more to hand in Western Carolina, NH, VT and places beyond over the years. As time went by and opportunities presented John pursued trout across the globe, from the Western American rivers, creeks and high altitude lakes to the rivers and streams of Labrador, New Zealand and Europe. Some of his escapades and fish have been chronicled in the Orvis News and American Angler Magazine.

John has been a fly fishing in southern Vermont for over 30 years and a licensed and endorsed Vermont fly fishing guide for the past six years.

Battenkill River Fishing Well

i got out for a few hours this afternoon on my home water, the Vermont side of the Battenkill River. The river is starting to take shape, the bugs were out and the fish were paying attention. Several quality wild trout were landed and one monster in the 25" range - just about all my Orvis Recon 3wt. could handle.

Rainy Snowy Start to April

Cold rainy and snowy storm has fish still in winter holding water. i appreciate the extra moisture its good for the water table - this moisture will bubble up through river bed springs keeping the Battenkill cool and fishing well through July.

Quality Winter Brown on Battenkill River

The sun was out and air temps reached 40 degrees. I couldn't stand it so wadered-up and headed to the Battenkill river to swing some large streamers for big browns looking for a late winter snack. I found fish in their winter holding water and was able to bring this big boy to hand after a good tussle. First Battenkill River brown of 2024 - just over 23" not a bad start to the year!

Summer Rain Setting Us Up For Epic Fall Season

We've had the rainiest July on record, I'm sure you saw our little stste in the news this summer. While much of the state was hammered our little corner in the Battenkill Valley faired relatively well. Strong flows and cool water temps has the trout very healthy this year. While I traditionally don't book trout trips in late July and August due to low, warm water this year I have got out a little with friends and found the fish happy and healthy. This abundent summer rain is setting us up for an amazing fall. I'll be guiding the back half of September and all of October on southern vermont rivers. Book early if you want to get out and have some chasing browns and brookies all colored up in there spawning coolers and an occasional big fat hold over rainbow or two...

High Water Success

Big rain the last week had Southern Vermont rivers up significatly. The Wallomsac was at 500CFS today verses its normal mid-summer flow if 100 CFS. The fish where pushed out of there usual holds into softer water but continued to feed subsurface. We had good rainbow and brown trout action all morning on small weighted nymphs.

defaultImg

Rainy Day Good Day To Fish

2 boats 4 good friends over a dozen fish. We got some much needed rain in Southern VT and the fish responded facoribke. Mostly nymph fishing today but close to 20 hook-uo and a dozen browns to net.

Vermont Flyfishing Peak

When It’s On, It’s on!

Another epic day fishing southern Vermont trout waters. steady fish all day on nymphs and streamers...

defaultImg

Double Digit Day

Double digit day in more ways than one. Well over 10 fish landed and several in the 18" plus range with one big female coming in at 22". River flows were manageable in the 400 cfs range and fish where keying on cadis at every stag in the life cycle. A really fun day to be out there...

Cold Rainy Raw But Caught Fish

Fished the Batten Kill river on the NY side of the line today- water temps high forties, air temps low forties and steady rain. Fortunatly the river flows weren't bad and we managed to land a few browns. Saw some caddis but trout where down all our action we on nymphs nesr the bottom.

Hendrickson HatcH Action

The first major hatch (Hendrickson) of the Vermont fly fishing season was in full force today on the Battenkill River in Southern Vermont with thousands of bugs coming off starting around 1pm. Fish where active moving up in the water column to eat. I had a very large fish break me off but managed to land three nice browns in the 10-12" range.

My wife and I and our 14-year old son went out for a day of fishing with John Rogers as our guide. John is an amazing guide! He knows how to fish, but more importantly, he knows how to teach people to fish. He spent time with my 14-year-old son and really worked with him to know what flies to use and how to cast where the fish will bite. We would highly recommend John for anyone looking for a great fishing experience! Can’t wait to come back to Vermont and do it again! Thanks John for a great day!

Three months before I sold my business I dreamed of the first couple of things that I would do when I locked my door for the last time. . The first was to visit my son who lived out of state. The second was to wet a line with my old college roommate John Rogers. Back in college John would guide me , some 30 plus years ago ....long before he became a professional accomplished guide. We fished the Wallomsac and the Hoosic. Not only did he put me on the fish , but educated me on the area and fisheries as well. Thanks for the memories. Cant wait to return

John was very knowledgeable and provided an incredible experience. I was a first timer and he made me feel like an expert by the end of the day. I had so much fun.

The knowledge I learned alone was worth the trip, then there were fish! And some more fish, then a few fish more. John Rogers was the most knowledgeable guide you could ask for!

Wonderful day on the Battenkill with John Rogers. John is a very knowledgeable guide and teacher. Most importantly his positive attitude and guidance made for a very memorable day on the river. No doubt that I have found a great guide and friend to fish the Battenkill!
