Homer Halibut & Salmon Combo Spring Charter
There's nothing quite like fishing the waters around Homer in late spring when both halibut and salmon are hitting hard. This combo trip targets the best of both worlds – you'll be dropping heavy jigs for barn door halibut while also working the salmon runs that make Homer famous. From May through mid-June, the fishing is as good as it gets, and you'll have the boat to yourself for a personalized day on the water. Our local captains know exactly where the fish are holding, and they'll put you on the action whether you're a weekend warrior or completely new to saltwater fishing.
What to Expect on the Water
This is a full-day charter that covers serious ground in Kachemak Bay and the surrounding waters. We'll start early to beat the crowds and hit the prime fishing spots while the bite is hot. The first part of the day usually focuses on halibut – we'll anchor up on productive structure and get you rigged with circle hooks and heavy sinkers. Once you feel that telltale thump and pull of a halibut, you'll understand why anglers travel from all over the world to fish these waters. After working the halibut grounds, we'll switch gears and target salmon using downriggers and flasher-dodger setups. The beauty of this combo trip is the variety – you're not stuck doing one thing all day, and the action stays fresh from start to finish.
Tackle & Techniques We Use
For halibut, we're talking heavy conventional reels spooled with 50-80 pound test, paired with 8-10 foot rods that can handle the weight and fight of these flatfish. We'll rig you up with 16-32 ounce sinkers depending on current and depth, running circle hooks with fresh herring or salmon bellies. The technique is straightforward but effective – drop to the bottom, reel up a few cranks, and wait for that distinctive halibut bite. For salmon, we switch to lighter tackle and run downriggers with flashers and spoons or herring. The salmon fishing here is all about covering water and finding the right depth where the fish are traveling. Our boats are equipped with quality fish finders and GPS, so we're not just guessing – we're putting you on fish based on real-time information and years of local knowledge.
Target Species You'll Hook
Chinook Salmon are the kings of these waters, and for good reason. These bruisers can push 40+ pounds in Alaska, with their broad shoulders and bulldogging fights that'll test your drag system. May and early June is prime time for kings in the Homer area – they're fresh from the ocean, chrome bright, and full of fight. What makes chinook special is their unpredictability. One minute they're hugging the bottom at 120 feet, the next they're suspended mid-column chasing bait. When you hook into a mature king, expect long runs and multiple head shakes that'll have your arms burning. The meat is rich and oily, perfect for the grill or smoker.
Coho Salmon, or silvers as we call them locally, are pound-for-pound some of the best fighting fish you'll encounter. They average 8-12 pounds but what they lack in size compared to kings, they make up for in acrobatics. Coho will jump, tail-walk, and run like crazy when hooked. They're typically found in the top 60 feet of the water column, often feeding on the surface in the early morning or evening. The late spring run in Homer produces some beautiful bright silvers that are absolutely dynamite on the table. Their pink meat is leaner than chinook but incredibly flavorful, and they're perfect for canning or smoking.
Atlantic Halibut are the reason most people make the trip to Homer – these are legitimate monster flatfish that can reach enormous sizes. While smaller "chicken" halibut in the 15-30 pound range are common and excellent eating, it's the potential for a true barn door that keeps anglers coming back. Fish over 100 pounds are caught regularly in these waters, and the all-tackle world record came from not far from here. Halibut are ambush predators that lie on the bottom waiting for baitfish, and when they decide to eat, they inhale the whole rig. The fight is different from salmon – more of a prolonged tug-of-war that tests your endurance. The meat is snow white, mild, and versatile, making it one of the most sought-after table fish in Alaska.
