Green sea turtles are probably the most exciting encounter you might have – these guys are pretty common in the shallow grass beds and calm bays around here. They're curious but gentle, and if you're lucky enough to see one surface near your kayak, just stay still and enjoy the moment. They can get pretty big, sometimes over 200 pounds, and they're most active in the morning hours when the water is cooler. Manatees occasionally cruise through these waters too, especially during the cooler months from December through March. These gentle giants are amazing to see from a kayak because you're so low to the water – when one surfaces nearby, it's like meeting an old friend. They're protected, so we always keep our distance, but they're naturally curious and might check you out from a safe space. The shallow areas we paddle through are also home to plenty of tropical fish – parrotfish, angelfish, and sergeant majors that you can see right from your kayak when the water's clear. Pelicans and frigatebirds are your constant companions out here, and watching them dive for fish while you're paddling never gets old.
