Morgan Whitehead
Captn’s Sportfishing offers professionally guided fishing charters on Vancouver Island, operating seasonally out of Port Renfrew and Comox. The company is owned and operated by Captain Morgan Whitehead, a certified tidal angling guide with more than 25 years of experience and over 30,000 hours on the water.
During the summer months, Captn’s Sportfishing is based out of Port Renfrew on the west coast of Vancouver Island, departing from Pacific Gateway Marina. This area is known for productive Chinook and Coho salmon fishing, reliable halibut grounds, strong Lingcod seasons, and crab opportunities. These trips are based on a 10-hour day, leaving at first light to take advantage of prime fishing conditions.
In winter, operations move to Comox Valley Marina in the Comox Valley. Winter trips are based on an 8-hour day, also departing at first light to make the most of the day.
In Port Renfrew, guests fish aboard a 28’ Northwest pilothouse boat with space for up to five passengers. It’s equipped with downriggers, quality rods and reels, tackle, and lures, and includes a toilet on board for convenience. In Comox, you’ll step aboard a 28’ Northwest aluminum fishing boat that can carry up to six passengers. This vessel is also outfitted with downriggers and all the gear needed for a productive day on the water, along with a toilet on board.
All trips include fishing gear, bait, tackle, and lures. Complimentary water, coffee, and hot chocolate are provided on board. Guests are asked to bring a valid fishing license, sunglasses, sunscreen, a hat, rain jacket, lunch, snacks, and comfortable clothing suited to the weather.
Safety is a top priority at Captn’s Sportfishing. A full safety orientation is given before departure, covering vessel operation and emergency procedures. The boat carries a Transport Canada–approved self-inflating life raft, life jackets, and a first aid kit, with all safety equipment kept current and in excellent condition.
Fish processing is available through a local company offering vacuum packing and flash freezing for overnight guests. Alternatively, fish can be filleted or cleaned dockside and bagged for travel. Ice is available at the marina for transport coolers.
Whether you’re booking a Port Renfrew fishing charter or a Comox fishing charter, Captn’s Sportfishing delivers a professional Vancouver Island sportfishing experience focused on safety, comfort, and consistent results.

Ratings & Reviews Summary

I’ve fished at some of the top lodges in Haida Gwaii, and our recent trip to Port Renfrew was right there with the best of them. Everything about the experience felt first class. Morgan is an excellent guide and an even better guy. He clearly loves to fish, keeps the day relaxed, and offers helpful advice during the fight to help you land your fish. We fished for two days and limited out on Chinook and halibut, with a few lingcod mixed in as well. The fish processing afterward was spot on. Vacuum packing and flash freezing were available for an added cost, and it was absolutely worth it. We also saw a surprising number of whales during the trip, which was a great bonus. We’re already planning to come back again next July.

Morgan had us on the water and into the bite in no time. He’s a true professional at the top of his game. Everything ran efficiently, with gear dialed in and a clear system that helped us land nearly every fish we hooked. We headed home with a full cooler of salmon and halibut, plus a few crabs to round out the catch.

Captain Morgan put us on fish even late in the season. He’s well organized, very knowledgeable, and made it a great day on the water.

From the moment we booked from New Zealand, the entire experience was handled professionally. The boat was well maintained, the skipper was second to none, and we would highly recommend the trip.
