Kasilof River King & Silver Salmon Charters
The Kasilof River runs clear and cold through some of Alaska's most productive salmon country, and from May through June, it's absolutely electric with King and Silver salmon pushing upstream. Our single-angler charters give you the personal attention every serious fisherman deserves – no crowded boats, no sharing prime spots, just you, your guide, and some of the finest salmon fishing Alaska has to offer. We've been working these waters for years, and we know exactly where the fish are holding and what they're biting on any given day.
What to Expect on the Water
Your day starts early – the best bite usually happens in the first few hours of daylight when the salmon are most active. We'll meet you at the boat launch with all your gear ready to go, from premium rods and reels to fresh bait and a tackle box full of proven lures. The Kasilof flows differently than the Kenai – it's smaller, more intimate, with deep pools and undercut banks that hold fish. You'll be drift fishing most of the time, letting your bait or lure work naturally through the current while we position the boat to hit every productive spot. The water's gin-clear in most stretches, so you'll often see the fish before you hook them. That moment when a 40-pound King materializes out of the depths and crushes your bait? That's what keeps anglers coming back year after year. Your guide will be right there coaching you through the fight, helping you land the fish of a lifetime while sharing stories about the river and the salmon runs that make this place special.
Techniques & Tackle Setup
We fish the Kasilof a bit differently than the bigger rivers – the narrower channels and shallower water call for more finesse. You'll be using medium-heavy spinning rods most of the time, spooled with 20-30 pound test depending on conditions and target species. For Kings, we'll rig you up with Spin-N-Glows, Kwikfish, or fresh cured roe – these big fish didn't get big by being stupid, so presentation matters. Silvers are more aggressive and will hit spoons, spinners, and flies with authority. We keep multiple rods rigged so you can switch techniques quickly when the bite changes. The boat is a custom drift boat designed specifically for Alaska's rivers – stable, maneuverable, and set up with all the amenities you need for a comfortable day on the water. Your guide will handle all the technical stuff like reading water, boat positioning, and net work, so you can focus on what you came here for – hooking fish. We provide all terminal tackle, but if you've got lucky lures or preferred gear, bring them along. Sometimes that old spoon from your tackle box is exactly what the fish want.
Top Catches This Season
Chinook salmon – the legendary Alaska King – are the crown jewel of the Kasilof River system. These fish average 25-35 pounds, with trophy specimens pushing 50+ pounds during peak season. Kings are incredibly strong fighters that will test your drag system and your endurance. They hit hard, run deep, and jump when they feel the hook – it's a battle that can last 20 minutes or more. The best King fishing happens from mid-May through mid-June when fresh chrome-bright fish are moving through the system. Early morning and evening hours produce the most action, though these fish can bite any time of day when conditions are right. What makes Kings special isn't just their size – it's their intelligence and power. They'll use every trick in the book to throw your hook, from wrapping around structure to making blistering runs that strip line off your reel. Landing a Kasilof King is a badge of honor that puts you in an exclusive club.
Coho salmon, or Silvers as we call them locally, bring a different kind of excitement to the river. These acrobatic fighters rarely weigh more than 12-15 pounds, but what they lack in size they make up for in pure athletic ability. Silvers are famous for their aerial displays – when hooked, they'll jump repeatedly, twisting and shaking their heads to throw the hook. They're also incredibly fast, making screaming runs that will have your drag singing. The Silver run typically peaks in late May and early June, overlapping perfectly with the King season. These fish are aggressive feeders and will hit a variety of lures, from bright spoons to flashy spinners. They school up in certain areas, so when you find them, you can often catch several in quick succession. Silvers are also excellent table fare – their firm, pink flesh is perfect for grilling or smoking, making them a favorite among anglers who like to eat their catch.
