Kasilof River King & Silver Salmon Charters
The Kasilof River delivers some of Alaska's best salmon fishing, and our guides know exactly where these fish like to hold up. From late May through June, this river transforms into a salmon highway as Kings and Silvers make their spawning runs. You'll fish pristine waters that flow from Tustumena Lake down to Cook Inlet, with crystal-clear pools and productive runs that have been producing trophy salmon for generations. Our one-on-one guide service means you get personalized attention and inside knowledge that only comes from fishing these waters day in and day out.
What to Expect on the Water
Your day starts early with a meet-up at our launch site where we'll get you rigged up with everything you need. We provide all the tackle, rods, and terminal gear - stuff that's proven to work on this river system. You'll be fishing from the bank and wading key spots where salmon tend to stage up during their runs. The Kasilof isn't a massive river, but it's got character. You'll work through deeper holes, shallow gravel bars, and current breaks where fish rest before pushing upstream. Our guides read water like a book and know which pools fire up at different tide cycles and times of day. Since you're getting dedicated one-on-one service, we can adjust tactics on the fly and put you on fish when conditions change throughout the day.
Techniques & Tackle Setup
We primarily use drift fishing techniques with cured roe, spinners, and spoons depending on water conditions and fish behavior. When the Kings are running thick, we'll set you up with heavy tackle and fresh skein that's been cured to perfection. For Silvers, we might switch to lighter gear with smaller offerings like blue foxes or pixee spoons that trigger aggressive strikes. You'll learn proper drift presentation, how to read your rod tip, and when to set the hook on subtle takes. The river runs clear most days, so we use fluorocarbon leaders and natural baits that don't spook fish. Our guides carry backup rods rigged with different setups so we can switch tactics without missing productive water. You'll also get tips on reading current seams, identifying holding water, and understanding how salmon behave during different stages of their spawning cycle.
Target Species Breakdown
Chinook Salmon, or Kings as we call them locally, are the crown jewel of Alaska salmon fishing. These fish push into the Kasilof system from mid-May through June, with peak action typically hitting around Memorial Day weekend. Kings in this river average 20-40 pounds, with occasional monsters pushing 50-plus pounds that'll test your drag and fighting skills. What makes Kings special is their raw power - they'll make long runs, jump when they feel like it, and dig deep into the current. The Kasilof Kings are bright chrome fresh from the salt, and they fight harder than fish that have been in the river system for weeks. These salmon are feeding machines in the ocean, but once they hit fresh water, they're running on pure instinct and aggression.
Coho Salmon, better known as Silvers, follow the Kings into the system and provide non-stop action through June. These fish might be smaller than Kings, averaging 8-15 pounds, but they're absolute rockets when hooked. Silvers are known for their acrobatic fights - expect multiple jumps, surface thrashing, and sudden direction changes that'll keep you on your toes. They're more aggressive than Kings and will often hit lures and baits with authority. The Kasilof Silvers run bright and thick, and on good days you might hook a dozen or more fish. What anglers love about Coho fishing is the visual excitement - these fish spend as much time in the air as they do in the water when fighting, and their chrome sides flash like mirrors in the Alaska sun.
