5-Hour Island Park Fluke Fishing Charter
Looking to get your line wet in some of New York's most productive inshore waters? Captain and crew aboard the FV Margarita know exactly where the bay fluke are hanging out around Island Park. This isn't your typical crowded party boat situation – we keep it intimate with just 4 anglers max, so everyone gets plenty of elbow room and personalized attention from our experienced skipper. Five solid hours on the water gives you real time to dial in your technique and put some quality fish in the cooler.
What to Expect on the Water
We'll meet you at the dock in Island Park bright and early, with all the tackle rigged and ready to go. Our captain has been working these waters for years and knows every productive drift, from the back bay channels to the prime fluke holes near the inlet. The boat's set up specifically for bottom fishing – plenty of rod holders, a spacious cockpit for fighting fish, and all the gear you need including rods, reels, sinkers, and fresh bait. Don't worry about bringing anything except your fishing license, some snacks, and maybe a cooler with ice if you want to take your catch home. We'll cruise out to the first spot based on tide, wind, and where the fish have been biting lately. The captain reads the water conditions and adjusts throughout the day to keep you on the most active fish.
Drift Fishing Techniques
Bay fluke fishing is all about reading the bottom and perfecting your drift. We use traditional fluke rigs – usually a sinker bouncer setup with a long leader and bucktail jig tipped with squid, spearing, or killies. The key is keeping your bait right on the bottom as we drift with the current over sandy patches, drop-offs, and structure where fluke like to ambush prey. You'll feel the sinker ticking along the bottom, and when a fluke picks up your bait, you'll know it – they hit with authority and put up a solid fight. Our captain will coach you on the proper jigging motion and help you distinguish between a fluke bite and just dragging bottom. We carry light to medium action rods that are perfect for feeling the bite but still have enough backbone to horse a nice doormat up from the depths.
Target Species Breakdown
Bay fluke, also called summer flounder, are the bread and butter of our Island Park fishing scene. These flatfish are masters of disguise, burying themselves in sand and mud with just their eyes showing, waiting to ambush unsuspecting baitfish. During our prime season from May through October, we typically see fluke ranging from keeper size at 19 inches up to true doormats pushing 8-10 pounds. The bigger fish usually hold in deeper water and around structure, while the smaller ones scatter across the flats. What makes fluke so exciting to target is their aggressive feeding behavior – when they're on the bite, they'll slam your jig hard enough to nearly pull the rod out of your hands. Plus, they're absolutely delicious table fare with sweet, white, flaky meat that's perfect for everything from fish tacos to traditional beer batter. The regulations change yearly, so we stay on top of size and bag limits to make sure you're always fishing legal. September and October tend to be our hottest months when the big fall fluke are feeding heavily before their offshore migration.
