Half Day Offshore Fishing Adventure
Port Canaveral sits right at the edge of some of Florida's most productive offshore waters, and this 5-hour fishing trip puts you in the heart of the action. We're talking about real blue water fishing here – the kind where you're targeting pelagic species that'll test your drag and leave you with stories to tell for years. Fish Junkies Fishing Charters knows these waters like the back of their hand, and they've got the crew and gear to put you on fish. With just 3 spots available, you're getting a personalized experience that's worlds apart from those crowded party boats.
What to Expect on the Water
Once we clear the inlet and hit deeper water, the game changes completely. We're running out to where the Gulf Stream influence brings in that deep blue color and the bait schools that attract the predators we're after. The crew handles all the heavy lifting – they've got quality tackle rigged and ready, fresh bait on ice, and the local knowledge to read the water and find the fish. You'll be trolling most of the day, which means covering water until we find active fish, then working that area hard. The boat's equipped with outriggers and downriggers to spread out the spread, giving us multiple shots at any school we encounter. Don't worry if you've never worked offshore tackle before – the crew walks you through everything from setting the drag to fighting technique.
Trolling Tactics & Gear Setup
Offshore trolling is an art form, and these guys have it dialed in. We're pulling a mix of ballyhoo, bonito strips, and artificial lures at different depths and distances from the boat. The outriggers let us run baits way out to the sides while keeping lines in the prop wash where aggressive fish like to hunt. You'll see everything from cedar plugs and feather jigs to rigged natural baits swimming behind the boat. When something hits, the crew knows exactly which rod is hooked up and gets everyone else reeled in fast so you can fight your fish without tangles. The tackle is heavy enough to handle anything we might encounter – 30 to 50-pound class stuff that can stop a big wahoo or sailfish when they make their runs.
Species You'll Want to Hook
Mahi Mahi are the bread and butter of Port Canaveral offshore fishing, and for good reason. These fish are pure aggression – they'll hit trolled baits hard and put on an aerial show that'll get your heart pumping. Dolphin, as the locals call them, travel in schools, so when you find one, there's usually more around. They're also fantastic eating, with firm white meat that tastes even better when you caught it yourself. Peak season runs from late spring through early fall, but you can find them year-round in the right conditions.
Wahoo are the speed demons of the offshore world, capable of hitting 60 mph when they want to. These torpedo-shaped predators have razor-sharp teeth and a habit of cutting through lighter leaders, which is why we fish heavy wire when we're targeting them. They're ambush hunters that love to slash through bait schools, and when one hits your trolled bait, you'll know it immediately. The initial run is absolutely screaming, and they're known for making multiple long runs before you can get them to the boat. Wahoo fishing peaks in the cooler months, roughly October through March.
Sailfish represent the crown jewel of Florida offshore angling. These magnificent billfish are pure athleticism – when hooked, they'll greyhound across the surface, walking on their tails and throwing spray everywhere. We practice catch and release with sails, taking quick photos before getting them back in the water healthy. They're around year-round but show up in better numbers during the winter months when the water temperatures drop slightly. Fighting a sailfish on properly balanced tackle is something every angler should experience at least once.
