Trips depart from Manistee and are set up for anglers of all skill levels, from first-timers to seasoned salmon hunters. The captain enjoys helping guests improve their skills, learn new setups, and feel confident fighting fish that are known for long runs and steady power. Many guests book year after year both for the quality of the fishery and the relaxed, patient teaching style that makes the experience enjoyable for adults and kids alike.
During the July–September season, the boat runs both morning and afternoon trips. Salmon are targeted using proven trolling spreads designed to cover water and locate active fish. Depending on conditions, lines may be set at varying depths to intercept migrating Chinook and Coho as they stage offshore. When fish push closer to the channel or river mouth, setups are adjusted to match the pattern. Guests are welcome to ask questions, handle gear under guidance, and learn the system firsthand.
Manistee is one of the most accessible salmon ports on Lake Michigan and is known for its attractive mix of fishing, tourism, lodging, and shoreline amenities. Many groups build a full vacation around a charter trip, making it a popular summer destination for families. Salmon trips run July through September only. From April through June, Fish PaTroll Sport Fishing operates walleye trips in Oak Harbor, Ohio on Lake Erie — widely known as the walleye capital of the world. These seasonal movements allow guests to book two fisheries at their peak while maintaining a consistent level of service, equipment, and expertise.

We were in a bind with pending weather and wanted to take my 7-year-old on his first salmon trip, and Fish PaTroll made it happen. I got in touch with Larry, and within 24 hours we were on the water. Amazing experience—Larry worked hard to put us on plenty of fish. Highly recommend fishing for salmon with him—you don’t want to miss out! We’ll definitely be booking another trip with him.
