World-Class Striper Trolling Adventure
Ready to get serious about striped bass? Four Winds Chartering's striper trolling trip puts you right where the big fish are feeding. This isn't your typical inshore casting session – we're talking about dedicated offshore action where seasoned anglers come to test their skills against some of the strongest fighters in the ocean. With room for up to 6 anglers, you'll have plenty of space to work the water without bumping elbows, and our captain knows exactly where these fish stack up throughout the season.
What to Expect on the Water
This trip is built for anglers who want to mix up their techniques and really dial in on stripers. We'll be running a combination of trolling, casting, and jigging depending on what the fish are telling us that day. The beauty of this setup is versatility – when we mark fish on the sonar, we can switch gears fast. Maybe we'll start the morning pulling spreader bars and bunker spoons in the trolling pattern, then when we find a good concentration of fish, we'll lock up the boat and get everyone casting or dropping jigs. The boat's rigged with quality tackle, but if you've got your favorite striper setup, bring it along. There's nothing like hooking into a 30-pound cow on gear you know inside and out. Plan to be on the water for a solid day of fishing, and don't forget to pack your own lunch and drinks since meals aren't included on this trip.
Trolling, Casting & Jigging
We run a clean trolling spread that covers water efficiently while giving each angler a shot at the action. Typically we'll pull four to six lines with a mix of bunker spoons, parachute jigs, and sometimes live eels when conditions are right. The key to successful striper trolling is reading the water and adjusting your speed – sometimes they want it fast at 6 knots, other times you need to slow it down to 2 knots and let those spoons flutter. When we mark fish or find birds working, that's when things get interesting. We'll position the boat and break out the casting gear – usually 7 to 8-foot medium-heavy rods with spinning reels loaded with 20-30 pound braid. For jigs, we like bucktails in the 2 to 4-ounce range depending on current and depth, tipped with soft plastics or pork rind. The jigging bite can be absolutely lights-out when you find fish holding on structure or in the current breaks.
Top Catches This Season
Striped bass are the name of the game here, and these fish have earned their reputation as one of the premier gamefish on the East Coast. These aren't your typical schoolie stripers you might catch from shore – we're targeting the big migratory fish that move through offshore waters following baitfish. During peak season, which typically runs from late spring through early fall, these fish are feeding heavily and putting on serious bulk. A typical keeper striper runs 28 inches and up, but don't be surprised when you hook into fish in the 35 to 45-inch range that'll test your drag and your endurance. What makes stripers so exciting to target is their aggressive feeding behavior and the way they fight – they'll make blistering runs, then turn and bulldoze toward the bottom using that broad tail and thick shoulders. When they're feeding on the surface, watching a 40-pound striper explode on a topwater plug or slam a trolled spoon is pure adrenaline. These fish are also incredibly smart, which means you need to stay sharp with your techniques and be ready to adapt when they get finicky.
