You'll meet us at the dock before sunrise, coffee in hand and ready to chase some fish. The boat's loaded with everything you need - rods, reels, tackle, bait, and ice for your catch. We'll cruise out about 3-7 miles offshore where the water turns that deep blue-green and the fish get bigger. The first hour is usually spent reading the water, watching the fish finder, and setting up based on what we're seeing. Some days the kings are schooled up and we'll troll spoons and live bait. Other days, the bottom bite is hot and we'll anchor up on structure with cut bait and jigs. The beauty of a 6-hour trip is we can switch tactics if one approach isn't producing. Our crew knows these waters like the back of their hand - where the ledges drop off, where the bait balls gather, and where the predators hunt.
We run two main game plans depending on conditions and what the fish are doing. Trolling is our bread and butter for kings, bonita, and cuda - we'll pull 4-6 lines at different depths using planers, wire line, and surface baits. The spread includes everything from Clark spoons to live pilchards on flat lines. When a fish hits, you'll know it immediately. That drag starts screaming and the rod doubles over. Bottom fishing targets the same species plus whatever else is hanging around the reefs and wrecks. We use circle hooks with cut mullet, sardines, or live shrimp depending on what we're after. The key is keeping your bait in the strike zone while dealing with current and wind. Our Shimano and Penn reels are spooled with braided line for sensitivity and hooksets. All tackle is included, but feel free to bring your lucky rod if you've got one.
King Mackerel are the crown jewel of Daytona Beach fishing, and for good reason. These silver bullets can stretch 20-40 pounds and make blistering runs that'll test your drag system. Peak season runs from April through October, but we catch them year-round in our warm Gulf Stream waters. They're ambush predators that love to slash through bait schools, so trolling with spoons or slow-trolling live bait is deadly effective. What makes kings special is their fight - they'll jump, dive deep, and make multiple runs before you get them to the boat. Plus, they're excellent eating when prepared fresh.
Bonita are the speed demons of the bunch, smaller but incredibly fast and aggressive. These 5-15 pound torpedoes will absolutely hammer a trolled bait and give you a fight way out of proportion to their size. They show up in good numbers from late spring through fall, often mixed in with king schools. Bonita are perfect for newer anglers because they bite readily and fight hard without the tackle-testing runs of a big king. They're also fantastic bait fish if you're targeting larger predators.
Barracuda bring the attitude to every trip. These toothy predators range from 10-30 pounds locally and will attack anything that moves. They're visual hunters with incredible speed, often following trolled baits right to the boat before striking. What's wild about cuda fishing is watching them hunt - they'll materialize out of nowhere, size up your bait, then explode on it with shocking violence. They're year-round residents here, though summer and fall tend to produce the biggest fish. Handle them carefully due to those razor-sharp teeth, but they put on a spectacular aerial show when hooked.
