These greenish fish with yellow spots lurk in shallow, weedy areas during spring and fall, then move to deeper waters when it heats up. They're ambush hunters that'll nail your lure with explosive strikes, making for exciting fights. Pike taste great too, despite the Y-bones. They hit spoons, spinners, and swimbaits hard. My go-to trick? Work your lure slow and steady like an injured fish, and when you feel that first hit, keep reeling at the same pace - pike like to play with their food before the real strike.
Sander VitreusWalleye are hands down the best eating fish in Lake Ontario and a real challenge to find. These golden beauties average 15-20 inches with those distinctive glassy eyes that help them hunt in low light. They stick to deeper waters during the day around rock piles, drop-offs, and weed edges, then move shallow at dusk and dawn. Spring and fall offer the best action when water temps hit 60-70°F. What makes them special? That sweet, flaky meat with zero fishy taste. They're finicky biters though - you'll work for every one. Best tip I can share: slow troll a live minnow or leech rig just off bottom along breaklines. Patience pays off with walleye.
Hyperprosopon ArgenteumWalleye Surfperch don't actually live in Ontario's freshwater - these are small Pacific saltwater fish found from Vancouver to Baja California. They're 5-7 inches on average with silvery bodies and big eyes, living in shallow coastal waters up to 60 feet deep. Peak season runs December through April around rocky areas, kelp forests, and sandy beaches. While not available on our Lake Ontario trips, they're popular with surf anglers because they're easy to catch in schools and make excellent bait for larger species like halibut. If you're ever fishing the Pacific coast, bloodworms and small crabs work best on light tackle near the bottom.
