Between stops, you're welcome to try your hand at spotting dolphins, sea turtles, or rays from the boat. We provide coolers with ice, so pack whatever food and drinks make your day complete. No experience needed with snorkeling or being on boats – we'll get you sorted with technique tips and make sure you're comfortable before any water time.
All snorkel gear comes included – masks, fins, and snorkels that actually fit properly (none of that one-size-fits-nobody stuff). We'll get you fitted up and do a quick rundown on clearing your mask and breathing techniques before you hop in. The reef sections we visit are typically in 8-15 feet of water, so you're not dealing with any serious depths, but deep enough to see some really spectacular coral formations and marine life. These reefs are part of the only living coral barrier reef in the continental U.S., which means the underwater scenery is legit world-class. We know exactly where the current is mellow and visibility is best – usually spots that aren't marked on any tourist maps. The sandbar areas are even easier – sometimes you can snorkel in just 4-5 feet of water and still see plenty of fish action. Water temperature stays pretty comfortable year-round, usually in the mid-70s to low-80s, so you won't need any wetsuit gear unless you just get cold easily.
The coral reefs around Islamorada are home to an amazing variety of tropical fish that'll keep you entertained for hours. Parrotfish are probably what you'll notice first – these chunky, colorful characters can grow up to two feet long and spend their days chomping on coral (you can actually hear them crunching underwater). They're super curious and often swim right up to snorkelers, especially the bigger blue and rainbow varieties. Look for them year-round, but they're most active during the warmer months when they're spawning and showing off their brightest colors.
Angelfish are another crowd favorite, and the reef we visit has some of the prettiest specimens you'll find anywhere. French angelfish and gray angelfish are the most common – they're about the size of a dinner plate and have these gorgeous yellow and black stripes or solid gray coloring with bright yellow fins. They're not shy at all and will often follow you around, especially if you move slowly and don't make sudden movements. Best time to spot them is mid-morning through early afternoon when they're most active feeding.
Keep your eyes peeled for southern stingrays on the sandy bottom areas near the reefs. These guys can have wingspans of 3-4 feet, but they're completely harmless if you don't step on them (which is why we always do the stingray shuffle in shallow water). They're masters of camouflage, so sometimes you'll swim right over one without noticing until it glides away. Spring and summer are prime ray season, and watching them gracefully cruise along the bottom never gets old. The sandbars are also perfect stingray habitat, so you might spot smaller ones in just a few feet of water.
