Vehicle Details
Fishing conditions around Lakeside Marblehead have been dynamic as we transition into late spring. Recent reports indicate that walleye fishing is strong, with anglers experiencing solid catches. One group managed to land nine walleye despite challenging north winds around 20 mph, highlighting the resilience of both the fish and the fishermen. Yellow perch fishing remains productive, particularly around the islands. Anglers are having success using spreaders tipped with shiners, with many reporting catches over 12 inches. This bodes well for those looking to fill their freezers with quality fish. Looking ahead, the weather forecast for the coming week includes a mix of warmer temperatures and potential thunderstorms. These conditions could affect fishing patterns, so it's advisable to stay updated on the latest forecasts and adjust plans accordingly. Overall, Lakeside Marblehead offers promising fishing opportunities as we move deeper into spring. Whether targeting walleye or perch, anglers can expect rewarding experiences on the water.
Now that the water has warmed and the spawn is mostly over with, it is becoming more difficult to find areas that are loaded with fish that aren't loaded with competing boats. I really prefer to fish areas where I'm not constantly having to pan 360° to make sure that I won't run across another boats path. And on this morning, I was able to find such a spot. We set up in an area where the closest boat was miles away and there we active fish. This area wan't loaded with fish but there were enough fish to us busy for the next 5 hours. Most of the fish were caught on Bandits but a few were caught on worm harnesses, 80' and 35' back respectively.
Unfortunately, no pics from this outting. We started our trip out of a nearby port and headed east. Part of the reason for choosing this area was to salvage a day that would have otherwise been cancelled due to high winds and unfishable conditions. We were part of a 3 boat crew. We set up in 13' of water and I pointed my bow on a line that would put us in 15-20 fow. 10 lines were set back 35' with bandits in mostly blue and chrome patterns. It wasn't long before the first line went back, and with it 4 others followed immediately. It wasn't until we had 21 fish that we finally got all 10 of our lines in the water. About 5 minutes later, I had the crew pull the lines in and we ran back up where we had started. After only an hour and a half, we had the customers limit and my 6. Since we were part of a multi boat trip, we decided to continue to fish and see if we could upgrade a few of our smaller fish.
3 boat trip(9 guys+captains). On day 1 of this multi day multi boat trip, we focused on keeping our baits in muddy water. We ran Bandits 100'-65' behind Offshore Tackle planer boards. Speeds were 1.6-1.9mph. On day 2, strong SW winds forced us to launch our boats 40 miles by land away from where we launched on the previous day. Bandits were set at 65', 60 and 55' for best results. Immediately, the bite was on, we were catching while setting lines, and it was close to 40 minutes before we finally got all of the lines in without catching a fish.
Just a short recap of the past few weeks into early March. Fishing has ranged from being outstanding to grindy. Weather and high winds have made it difficult at times to repeat previous days success, by stirring up and muddying the water, or just plain unaccessible.Typical spring time tactics of short leads on long body crankbaits continue to be productive. We are now about a week or two into changing to post spawn tactics which include longer leads on Bandit crankbaits and a mix of Husky Jerks and Scatter Raps and as the water warms we will be transitioning to nightcrawler harnesses.
Group from Minnesota, Day 1 of 4. Bandits in chrome based colors, high in the water column. Todays water temp 40-42°, speed 1.3-1.6 water stained.
It is at this time of year that I am able to focus on family and my equipment. I have already had the Skeeter in for preventative maintenance, in order to ensure that I am ready to go as soon as it is safe to get back out on the water. New rods and reels have been purchased for the 2024 season! I am also using this time to catch up on a lot of items that have been neglected at home over the past year(honey dos per se.) I am also using this time to gear up for a trip to Cascade Lake in Idaho. This is one of my bucket list locations, and I am excited to potentially catch multiple perch over 14" and over 2 pounds. Well after 4 days of fun fishing for myself, I was able to accomplish what i set out for. Lake Cascade was a bucket list trip and it did not dissapoint. On day one, my first fish was a 1.82#, 15 1/2" perch. Day 2 I caught a 2.24#, 16 1/4" monster and another 15+"er.
