Marathon Reef & Offshore Fishing Charters
Captain Anthony and the No Limit Sportfishing crew know these Marathon waters like the back of their hands, and they're ready to put you on fish whether you've got four hours or want to make it a full-day adventure. Based right here in the heart of the Florida Keys, we're talking about some of the most productive fishing grounds on the planet. You'll have your pick between targeting structure fish on the reefs and wrecks closer to shore, or heading way out into the blue water where the big boys live. Either way, you're looking at a top-rated fishing experience that'll have you planning your next trip before you even get back to the dock.
What to Expect on the Water
When you step aboard with Captain Anthony, you're getting a charter that's built around putting fish in the boat. The 4-hour reef and wreck trips keep us within range of some legendary fishing spots where amberjack, cobia, and grey snapper make their home. We're talking about hitting artificial reefs, old shipwrecks, and natural ledges that hold fish year-round. If you opt for the 8-hour offshore adventure, we're pushing out to the edge where the continental shelf drops off and pelagic species cruise the current lines. The boat's equipped with everything you need - quality rods, reels, tackle, and bait - so you can focus on what matters most: fighting fish. Captain Anthony reads the water like a book, adjusting techniques and locations based on what's biting and where the action's happening that particular day. With a maximum of four anglers, everyone gets plenty of room to fish and personal attention from the crew.
Techniques & Top Spots
The beauty of Marathon fishing lies in the variety of approaches we can take depending on conditions and target species. On the reef and wreck trips, we're typically bottom fishing with live bait or cut bait, dropping down to structure anywhere from 60 to 120 feet. The technique is straightforward but effective - we'll anchor up on productive spots and let the fish come to us. Circle hooks and medium-heavy tackle are the norm, giving you the backbone to pull fish away from structure while still having some fun on the fight. When we head offshore, the game changes completely. We're talking about trolling spread with ballyhoo, rigging live bait for kite fishing, or working the weed lines and temperature breaks where dolphin and tuna patrol. The offshore grounds can be anywhere from 15 to 30 miles out, depending on where the Gulf Stream is pushing and what the water looks like. Captain Anthony's got the electronics and local knowledge to find the bite, whether that means working a debris line, hitting a seamount, or setting up on a color change where clean blue water meets the green inshore stuff.
Species You'll Want to Hook
Amberjack are the real bruisers of the reef and wreck scene around Marathon, and for good reason - these fish fight like freight trains and can easily push 40 to 60 pounds. They hang around structure year-round, but the cooler months from November through March are when we see the biggest fish moving in. What makes amberjack so exciting is their initial run when hooked - they'll dive straight for the bottom and test every ounce of drag you've got set. The fight typically involves a lot of pumping and winding, but landing a big AJ is something every angler remembers. They're also excellent table fare when prepared right, with firm white meat that's perfect for grilling or blackening.
Cobia are another customer favorite that patrol both the reefs and open water around Marathon. These bronze-colored fish are curious by nature and often cruise near the surface, making them perfect targets for sight fishing when conditions are right. Spring and early summer are prime time for cobia, particularly April through June when they're moving through on their spawning migration. What sets cobia apart is their willingness to eat both live and artificial baits, plus they put up a dogged fight that combines long runs with head-shaking jumps. They're also one of the best eating fish in these waters, with meat that tastes similar to shark but with a cleaner flavor profile.
Grey snapper, or mangrove snapper as the locals call them, are the bread and butter of reef fishing in the Keys. These fish are incredibly smart and can be finicky feeders, which makes landing a nice one even more satisfying. They're year-round residents on the reefs and wrecks, but the bigger specimens - those pushing 15 to 20 inches - are more active during the warmer months. What makes snapper fishing so addictive is the technique required: light leaders, natural baits, and precise presentations near structure. They're also hands-down some of the best eating fish you'll find, with sweet, flaky white meat that's perfect for anything from fish tacos to a fancy dinner.
