Conditions: Mild temperatures, good clarity on the Umpqua River, light winds offshore Fishing around Reedsport is heating up as we move into May. The Umpqua River is producing solid spring chinook salmon action, especially in the early mornings and late afternoons. Anglers trolling herring or using spinners are reporting hookups between Reedsport and Scottsburg. Bank anglers are also getting in on the action using cured eggs under a bobber. Bottom fishing has been productive offshore when weather allows. Boats heading out of Winchester Bay are finding limits of rockfish and a few impressive lingcod. Near the jetties, greenling and cabezon are starting to show more frequently, with fresh bait and light tackle producing best. Crabbing remains steady in the bay with full pots not uncommon, especially on an incoming tide. Surf anglers are landing redtail surfperch along the beaches near the South Jetty using sand shrimp or Gulp! sandworms. Trout fishing is also picking up in nearby lakes like Lake Marie and Eel Lake, with stocked rainbows biting well in the mornings.

If there was an option for 500% I would select it. Hands down a solid good person which we all know there is very few like him left. His boat is accessible to all including wheelchair bound folks. Bathroom on board and well you also get to spend an amazing day on the big pond with Dave.

I recently had a great experience going out with Captain Dave and his first mate, Troy. My wife and I had four friends from my college days come from the East Coast to see beautiful Winchester Bay. Captain Dave was recommended to me and we had a very memorable day. He’s a skilled Boat handler and his beautiful 30’ vessel is rugged and comfortable. Dave and Troy are fun to be with and incredibly knowledgeable. We always felt safe. We caught lots of yellowtail rockfish and a couple canary rockfish. We harvested about a dozen crabs as well. We were treated very well and I plan on coming back to fish halibut in the near future, I hope, all of us enjoyed our experience. It was just what we needed! I give him a top rating!

Amazing trip. Captain Dave was very considerate of my elderly father when he got sick. We did an ash spreading then hunted some salmon. Had a great time.

You have to love Winchester Bay ..Captain Dave (Ocean Obsession Guide Service) graciously waited until the rain stopped at 2 pm for Cathy’s first ever crab trip..a 10 minute idle to the crab gear which happened to be only 100yds from our RV . His puller was down for repairs so he and I had to pull by hand ..2 fathoms (which in landlubber terms is 12 feet 😁)First pot had 30 very nice crab …from legal to commercial grade.Back at the dock by 2:45..as usual Dave was great.like being on a friend’s boat .Again 100$ each for 12 crab each is a great deal! It was great to be able to cook crab and look at the buoys where we caught them
