Half Day Lobster Trip In Islamorada
Looking for something different than your typical fishing charter? Our 4-hour lobstering adventure puts you right in the action, snorkeling the crystal-clear shallows around Islamorada while hunting for Florida's prized spiny lobsters. This isn't your standard sit-and-wait fishing trip – you'll be diving down, searching ledges and coral heads, and using your hands to snag these tasty crustaceans. With an experienced captain guiding you to the best spots and providing all the gear you need, this top-rated Keys experience gives you a taste of what makes lobster season so special down here. Whether you've never held a snorkel or you're a seasoned waterman, we'll have you hauling bugs like a pro.
What to Expect on the Water
Your morning starts at our dock in Islamorada, the heart of the Middle Keys and hands-down the best launching point for lobster hunting. We'll run you out to some of our favorite shallow water spots – places where the bottom structure holds plenty of spiny lobsters but won't have you diving in 20 feet of water. Most of our hunting happens in 6 to 12 feet, perfect for snorkeling and giving you plenty of bottom time to search. The water clarity here is what makes Islamorada famous – you'll spot lobsters tucked under coral heads and ledges from the surface. Our experienced guide will show you exactly what to look for: those long antennae poking out, the telltale spots on their shells, and the best holes where they like to hide. You'll get a full briefing on proper technique before you even get in the water, plus hands-on coaching once you're swimming around. With only 6 guests max, everyone gets personal attention and plenty of opportunities to practice their skills.
Gear and Hunting Technique
We provide everything you need for a successful hunt – quality snorkel gear that fits properly, tickle sticks for coaxing lobsters out of their holes, and nets for securing your catch. The tickle stick technique is an art form down here, and our guides have been perfecting it for years. You'll learn how to gently work the stick behind a lobster to encourage it forward, then use your other hand to grab it cleanly. Proper measurement is crucial since undersized bugs mean hefty fines – we carry gauges and know exactly what's legal. The hunt happens in some of the most beautiful shallow water habitat in the Keys, over turtle grass beds and around patch reefs where lobsters love to set up shop. You'll be free diving, so no heavy scuba gear or complicated equipment. Just mask, fins, snorkel, and the tools of the trade. We also provide fresh water for rinsing and will clean your catch at the end of the trip, so you go home with perfectly prepared lobster tails ready for the grill.
Target Species
The Caribbean spiny lobster is what we're after, and these crustaceans are perfectly adapted to the Keys environment. Unlike their cold-water cousins up north, spiny lobsters don't have claws – all the meat is in that muscular tail. They're most active at night, which means our daytime hunts focus on finding them in their hiding spots among the coral and rock formations. During peak season from August through March, you'll find them ranging from just legal size at 3 inches carapace length up to true monsters pushing 5 or 6 inches. The bigger ones are smart and tend to wedge themselves deep in holes, making them a real challenge to extract. What makes hunting them so addictive is the combination of skill, patience, and underwater awareness it requires. You need to read the bottom structure, approach quietly so you don't spook them deeper into their holes, and execute the grab perfectly. These lobsters can shoot backward lightning-fast when threatened, and there's nothing quite like the satisfaction of outsmarting one and securing it in your net. The meat quality is world-class – sweet, firm, and perfect for grilling with just butter and garlic.
