What to Expect on the Water
This trip is built around small groups and personal attention – something you won't find on those packed party boats. With only six spots available, you'll get plenty of time working directly with the crew, learning proper pot placement, and understanding how to read the water for the best crab habitat. We launch early to hit the prime spots while conditions are calm, giving you maximum bottom time in the most productive areas. The boats are equipped with everything from bait to measuring tools, so all you need to bring is yourself and maybe a cooler for the ride home. Our guides have been working these waters for years, and they know exactly where the big Dungeness like to hang out. You'll be setting pots, learning to read the bottom structure, and getting a real education in Oregon coastal crabbing techniques that you can use for years to come.
Techniques & Gear Breakdown
Crabbing might look simple, but there's definitely an art to doing it right. We'll show you how to properly bait the pots using the freshest stuff we can get our hands on – usually fish carcasses or chicken that really gets the crabs moving. Pot placement is crucial, and our crew will teach you how to read depth charts and identify the rocky bottom structure where Dungeness crabs love to feed. You'll learn the right way to lower pots, mark your lines, and most importantly, how to pull them without losing your catch. We use commercial-grade pots and lines that can handle the Oregon Coast's challenging conditions, plus all the measuring tools to make sure every crab you keep is legal size. The boats are rigged with hydraulic pullers that make bringing up heavy pots a breeze, but you'll still get that hands-on experience of checking each pot and sorting your catch. Weather permitting, we'll work multiple spots throughout the day, adjusting our strategy based on what the crabs are telling us.
Target Species
Dungeness crab is the main event on these Oregon Coast waters, and for good reason – these guys are absolute gold when it comes to sweet, meaty seafood. Adult Dungeness typically run anywhere from 6 to 10 inches across the shell, with the real monsters pushing close to 2 pounds of pure eating. They're most active during cooler months, which makes fall through early spring prime time for crabbing, though we pull them year-round depending on regulations. What makes Dungeness special is their behavior – they're opportunistic feeders that move with the tides and seasons, following baitfish and scavenging along the bottom structure. You'll find them in depths ranging from 20 to 300 feet, usually hanging around rocky areas, sandy bottoms near structure, or anywhere there's good current flow bringing food their way. The males are your keepers – they need to measure at least 5¾ inches across the back of the shell to be legal, and trust me, there's nothing better than pulling up a pot full of big male Dungeness after a solid soak time. These crabs are fighters too, so don't expect them to come up easy – they'll pinch, they'll try to escape, and they'll definitely keep you on your toes throughout the day.
