Florida Scalloping Adventure | Reel Hard Charters
Looking for something different than your usual fishing trip? Our seasonal scalloping charter offers a refreshing change of pace that'll have you diving headfirst into Florida's crystal-clear waters. From June 15 through September 5, we're running these popular 4-hour trips that get you up close and personal with some of the Gulf's sweetest treasures. You'll be snorkeling in shallow waters, hunting for bay scallops with mask and fins instead of rod and reel. It's hands-on, family-friendly, and downright addictive once you get the hang of it.
What to Expect on the Water
We kick things off bright and early at 8:00 AM when the water's calm and visibility is at its peak. Your group of up to 4 guests will have the boat to yourselves, which means more room to spread out and better chances at hitting the prime scalloping grounds without fighting crowds. The water we're working is typically 3 to 8 feet deep over grass flats where these little guys love to hang out. Temperature stays comfortable through the season, usually sitting pretty in the mid-80s. We'll spend our time cruising between productive spots, and once we anchor up, it's time to gear up and get wet. The whole experience feels more like treasure hunting than traditional angling – you're scanning the bottom, spotting movement, and making quick dives to snag your limit.
Gear Setup & Technique
Forget about rigging lines or tying knots – this trip is all about mask, snorkel, and fins. We've got everything you need on board: quality masks that won't fog up, comfortable snorkels, fins in all sizes, plus mesh bags and scallop nets for your haul. The technique is straightforward but takes a little practice. You'll be floating on the surface, scanning the grass beds below for that telltale flash of scallop shells. When you spot one, take a deep breath and dive down to grab it before it jets away. These critters can actually swim by clapping their shells together, so you've got to be quick. The trick is learning to recognize their camouflage against the sea grass and getting comfortable with short breath-hold dives. Most folks get the hang of it within the first half hour, and by the end of the trip, you'll be diving like a pro.
Bay Scallop Breakdown
Bay scallops are the main event here, and they're nothing like the massive sea scallops you see in fancy restaurants. These guys are smaller, about the size of a silver dollar, with beautiful fan-shaped shells that range from brown to orange to almost purple. They've got dozens of tiny blue eyes around the rim of their shells that can actually detect shadows and movement – pretty wild for a shellfish. The meat inside is incredibly sweet and tender, perfect for a quick sear in butter or raw with a splash of lime. What makes them special in Florida waters is their seasonal nature. They spawn through the summer months, which is why our season runs June through early September when populations are healthy and sustainable. You'll find them nestled in turtle grass beds, usually in areas with good water flow but protection from heavy currents. They're filter feeders, so they prefer clean water with plenty of plankton, which is why our local grass flats are perfect habitat.
Time to Book Your Spot
This seasonal window doesn't last long, and spots fill up fast once word gets out about good scalloping conditions. With only 4 guests per trip, you're getting personalized attention and prime access to our best honey holes. We handle the fishing license requirements, provide all the gear, and put you on productive water where you can actually fill your bags. Whether you're looking to try something new or just want a break from regular fishing, this trip delivers a unique way to harvest your own dinner while enjoying Florida's beautiful inshore waters. The season's already underway, so don't wait too long to secure your dates – these summer slots book solid with both locals and visitors who know how good the scalloping can be.
