Half Day Offshore Fishing in Panama City
Captain Jason and the Reel Steel Charters team know exactly where the fish are biting in Panama City's Gulf waters. This 4-hour offshore adventure targets the heavy hitters - Red Snapper, Gag Grouper, King Mackerel, Mahi Mahi, and Greater Amberjack - in some of Florida's most productive fishing grounds. You'll hit the reefs and wrecks where these species love to hang out, using proven techniques that consistently put fish in the boat. Everything's included - rods, reels, tackle, bait, and permits - so you just show up ready to fish.
What to Expect on the Water
Your day starts early as Captain Jason runs you out to his favorite offshore spots, typically 10-20 miles from shore where the real action happens. The Gulf of Mexico around Panama City is loaded with natural and artificial reefs, plus plenty of wrecks that hold big fish year-round. You'll spend your 4 hours working different structures and depths, adjusting techniques based on what's biting and where the fish are holding. The boat accommodates up to 6 anglers, giving everyone plenty of room to fish without getting tangled up. Captain Jason's been working these waters for years and knows exactly how to position the boat for maximum success, whether you're dropping baits to the bottom or working the water column.
Trolling, Reef & Wreck Tactics
This trip combines three proven offshore techniques to maximize your catch. Trolling covers water fast and picks up pelagic species like Mahi and King Mackerel that roam the open Gulf. When you hit the reefs and wrecks, it's time for bottom fishing - dropping heavy tackle down 60-120 feet where Grouper, Snapper, and Amberjack live. Captain Jason provides all the gear, from heavy conventional reels loaded with 50-80 lb test to the circle hooks and weights needed for bottom structure. The tackle boxes are stocked with everything from live bait to jigs and spoons. You'll learn proper technique for fighting big fish off structure without getting broken off, plus how to work different baits at various depths depending on what species you're targeting.
Customer Stories
"Jason and Jennifer were amazing!!! My wife daughter and I set out to catch Vermilion Snapper and Red Grouper to keep and cook. Thats exactly what we got and more. Caught 2 red grouper. One had to be thrown back was under the 20inch regulation. The other was 20 inches. At least 10 trigger fish were caught, we kept one. The Vermilion Snapper were HITTING but were under the regulation. The wife caught some real exotic fish that Captain Jason has never seen. 2 hrs into the 4hr trip our 12 year old daughter got sea sick which stopped the fishing. But didnt stop the fun Captain Jason ane Jennifer spotted dolphins swimming near shore and our fishing trip turned into a dolphin tour. Great experience. The customer service, fishing, boat and experience were 5 stars. Will definitely be back during Red Snapper Season." - Herald
"We very much appreciated our time with Reel Steel Charters. Captain's communication and guidance before departure was excellent. Boat was great. And Jason and Jennifer were very pleasant--the kind of folks who are great to fish with and would be great to hang out with off the water. We caught several fish and were grateful for Capt. Jason accommodating our needs. Would definitely fish with again!" - J.

Species You'll Want to Hook
Red Snapper are the crown jewel of Gulf fishing, and Panama City's offshore reefs hold some true giants. These crimson beauties average 3-8 pounds but can push 15+ pounds on the right day. They're structure-oriented fish that live on rocky bottom and artificial reefs, typically in 60-120 feet of water. Red Snapper have excellent eyesight and can be picky eaters, but when they're feeding aggressively, you'll know it. The fight is strong and steady - they'll make powerful runs toward structure trying to cut you off. Peak season runs June through August, but you'll find keeper-sized fish year-round. What makes them special is the firm, white meat that's perfect for the dinner table.
Gag Grouper are the heavyweight champions of the reef, with fish commonly reaching 10-20 pounds and occasional monsters topping 30. These ambush predators lurk around ledges, rocks, and wrecks, waiting to inhale anything that looks like an easy meal. When you hook a big Gag, expect a bulldogging fight straight down toward structure - they'll try every trick to get back to their hole. The key is stopping that initial run and working them up slowly. Fall and winter are prime time for trophy Gag Grouper, when cooler water concentrations fish on structure. Their thick, flaky fillets make them one of the most sought-after table fare species in the Gulf.
King Mackerel are the speed demons of the offshore world, capable of blistering runs that'll scream drag off your reel. These silver bullets average 10-25 pounds but can reach 40+ in Panama City waters. Kings are pelagic fish that roam the open Gulf, often following bait schools and temperature breaks. They're typically caught while trolling, with live bait or spoons producing the most action. The fight is all about speed - multiple long runs punctuated by acrobatic jumps as they try to throw the hook. Spring and fall migrations bring
