There’s something timeless about chasing fish along the Mississippi Gulf Coast, and Captain Richard Schmidt has spent more than 40 years mastering these waters. His love for fly fishing runs deep—it began with curiosity and evolved into a lifelong pursuit. In 1998, he opened a small fly shop where anglers would gather to swap stories and gear up for their next trip. Soon, everyone wanted more than just flies—they wanted to learn firsthand. So Richard took them fishing, and that’s where his guiding journey began. Today, Captain Schmidt is known as one of the most respected fly fishing guides along the coast.
Based in Bay St. Louis, Gulfport, and Long Beach, Richard specializes in sight casting for redfish, black drum, sheepshead, and speckled trout. These shallow flats and coastal marshes offer some of the most rewarding fly fishing opportunities in the South. Whether you’re new to the sport or an experienced angler refining your cast, Richard’s patient teaching style and personalized approach make every trip memorable. His motto is simple: “Fish hard!”—but always with a sense of fun and appreciation for the craft.
Each trip is tailored for two anglers, ensuring hands-on guidance and plenty of space to fish comfortably. Choose from a full-day (8-hour) adventure or a half-day (4-hour) trip, with typical start times at 8 a.m. or 1 p.m. For those who want to perfect their technique, Richard also offers private fly casting lessons at $100 per hour for up to two students, starting at 9 a.m.
You’ll be outfitted with top-of-the-line gear, including Sage rods, Tibor reels, and hand-tied flies designed specifically for local species. Ice, bottled water, and even a dozen fresh Tato Nut Donuts are provided to keep the day easy and enjoyable. All you need to bring are polarized sunglasses, protective clothing, sunscreen, and a sense of adventure.
Fishing here is productive year-round, with peak action shifting slightly as seasons change—but the thrill of sight fishing in clear, shallow water never fades. Whether you’re stalking a tailing redfish or spotting a cruising black drum, Captain Schmidt’s knowledge and energy make every cast count.
Come experience world-class fly fishing along the Mississippi coast. With Captain Richard Schmidt, it’s not just about catching fish—it’s about learning, laughing, and loving every moment on the water.
