Learn Surf Casting & Fly Casting with Cape Cod Legend Ron Arra
Want to cast like a pro and actually know what you're doing when you hit the surf? Ron Arra's been teaching anglers the art of surf casting and fly casting on Cape Cod for years, and his lessons are hands-down the best way to level up your shore fishing game. Whether you're a complete beginner who's never held a surf rod or an experienced angler looking to add serious distance to your cast, Ron's personalized approach will have you reading water and working lures like you've been doing it for decades. These aren't your typical group lessons either - with space for just you or up to 3 guests total, you get Ron's full attention and decades of Cape Cod fishing wisdom.
What to Expect on the Water
Ron schedules every lesson around the tides because that's when the fish are most active and you'll get the most out of your time on the beach. You'll meet him at one of his proven spots along the Cape - places where he's been putting clients on fish for years. The beauty of learning with Ron is that he doesn't just teach you to cast; he shows you how to read the structure, understand what the stripers are doing, and position yourself for success. Each lesson runs about 2.5 hours, giving you plenty of time to work on your technique without feeling rushed. Don't expect this to be a fishing charter where you're hoping to fill a cooler - this is about building skills that'll serve you for life. Though plenty of students do hook up during their lessons, the real value is walking away with confidence and knowledge you can't get from YouTube videos.
Casting Techniques & Gear
Ron breaks down surf casting into manageable pieces that make sense, starting with proper knot tying and gear selection before you ever make your first cast. His teaching method focuses on distance and accuracy - you'll learn how to cast over 100 yards with less effort than you'd think possible. He covers everything from the fundamentals of loading your rod properly to advanced techniques for working different lures in the surf. You'll get hands-on experience with top water plugs, needlefish, and various other striped bass lures, learning when and how to use each one based on conditions. The fly casting portion covers both saltwater fly techniques and how to adapt your freshwater skills to the ocean environment. Ron provides all the gear during lessons, but he'll also give you solid recommendations for building your own setup once you're ready to fish solo.
Customer Stories
"Ron was a wonderful guide - super knowledgeable, I learned so much from him, and enjoyed the entire experience. He also knew the spots to go to, which was invaluable, and provided advice well beyond the scope of the lesson!!" - Geri
"I always wanted to do surf casting and as a recently retired lawyer I had the time to do so. I was fortunate to schedule a lesson with Ron Arra which was beyond my expectations! At first I was not able to even direct my cast to land in the ocean. After another 40 minutes of instruction and encouragement from Ron, I got it ! Ron taught me the technique in simple direct terms and i am planning to buy a rod and reel this week. My lesson was not only satisfying but also instilled a sense of peacefulness. In addition, Ron is a great conversationalist and he is extremely knowledgeable about fishing, fish behavior and the geography of the Cape. The lesson was like going fishing with your uncle. See you on the beach!" - Bernard
"Ron Arra had my 12 year old son casting over 100 yards in about 30 minutes. He is incredibly knowledgeable, and broke down the surf casting form and technique into easy-to-learn bites. We spent two and a half hours on the water, after some brief explanation of knots, lures and gear. My son was thrilled and couldn't believe how far he could cast so quickly into the lesson. Then, after he was casting consistently, Ron worked with my son on lure retrieval, and the proper use of the different lures. Top Waters, Needle fish, Plugs, etc. Soon, he was working lures back in the surf like an expert. As a parent, it was extremely gratifying to see so much progress so fast. After the lesson was over, Ron autographed a copy of his book and gave it to my boy. My son can't wait to head out again, and he couldn't be more excited about saltwater fishing and surf casting. Thanks to Ron for a great morning, and a lot more fishing for us in the future. Todd B. Natick, MA" - Todd
Striped Bass - The Crown Jewel
Striped bass are what dreams are made of for surf casters, and Cape Cod is absolutely prime territory for these incredible fish. These powerful predators can range anywhere from schoolie size around 20 inches up to true cows pushing 40+ pounds, and they'll test every bit of skill Ron teaches you. Stripers are structure-oriented fish that love to ambush baitfish around rocks, drop-offs, and current breaks - exactly the kind of water reading skills you'll develop during your lesson. The best action typically happens during moving water, which is why Ron times lessons with the tides. Spring and fall migrations bring the largest concentrations of fish, but summer offers consistent action with resident populations. What makes striped bass so special is their fight - they're strong, smart, and will use every trick in the book to shake your hook. They'll run toward structure, jump, and make powerful surging runs that'll get your heart pumping. The satisfaction of hooking a striper on a lure you worked properly through the surf, using techniques you learned from a master like Ron, is something every angler should experience. These fish respond to different presentations depending on conditions - sometimes they want a fast-retrieved surface plug, other times a slow-rolled soft plastic does the trick. Learning to read their behavior and adjust your approach is what separates successful surf casters from weekend warriors.
