Our small group setup - just three hunters max - means you get personalized attention and plenty of shooting opportunities. Whether you've been chasing ducks for decades or you're picking up a shotgun for the first time, our experienced guides know these waters like the back of their hand and they'll put you on birds.
Inside the Hunt
Your day starts before dawn when we meet at the launch point. We'll load up the gear and head out to one of our prime hunting spots - could be a cattail marsh where the wood ducks love to sit, or maybe one of the bigger lakes where mallards raft up by the hundreds. The blinds we use are well-constructed and comfortable, giving you good concealment while keeping you dry. We provide the decoy spreads and know exactly how to set them based on wind direction and bird behavior that day. You'll bring your own shotgun, shells, and hunting license, but we've got everything else dialed in. The beauty of hunting from blinds is you can stay comfortable while waiting for flights to come in, and when they do, you're perfectly positioned for clean shots. Our guides will call birds in close and coach you through the action, making sure safety comes first but that you also get the most out of every opportunity.
Tracking Tips & Terrain
The Sebewaing area sits right in the heart of Michigan's waterfowl flyway, with a mix of shallow bays, protected marshes, and agricultural fields that ducks use for feeding and resting. We hunt from permanent and portable blinds depending on conditions and where the birds are holding. The terrain here varies from cattail-choked backwaters perfect for wood ducks to open water situations where divers and puddle ducks mix together. Wind direction plays a huge role in our blind selection - ducks want to land into the wind, so we position our spreads accordingly. Early season hunting often means warmer weather and birds that haven't been pressured much, while late season brings cold fronts that really get the birds moving. We read weather patterns constantly and adjust our approach. Foggy mornings can be fantastic as ducks fly lower and decoy more readily. The key technique here is patience combined with good calling - our guides know when to be aggressive on the calls and when to stay quiet and let the decoys do their work.
Target Game Breakdown
Mallards are the bread and butter of our hunts here in Sebewaing. These big, beautiful ducks show up in good numbers throughout the season, especially when cold weather pushes birds down from Canada. Mallards are smart and can be call-shy, but they respond well to confident calling and realistic decoy spreads. The drakes are gorgeous with their green heads and white collars, while the hens have that classic quack that every hunter recognizes. They're excellent eating and make for great photos. Peak mallard hunting usually happens from mid-October through November when migration really kicks into high gear.
Black ducks are the wary ghosts of the marsh - these birds are incredibly smart and provide a real challenge even for experienced hunters. They look similar to female mallards but are darker overall with bright orange feet. Black ducks prefer quieter backwaters and smaller potholes, and they're notorious for circling a decoy spread multiple times before committing. When you do connect on a black duck, you've earned it. They're considered a top-tier duck by serious waterfowlers because of their wariness and the skill required to hunt them successfully. The meat is excellent, and they're a trophy bird that many hunters specifically target.
Wood ducks are hands down the most beautiful waterfowl in North America, and we see good numbers of them in our marshes and timber areas. The males have incredible plumage with iridescent greens and purples, white stripes, and bright red eyes. Wood ducks love shallow water with plenty of cover - exactly what we have around Sebewaing. They fly fast and twist through the trees, making them a challenging but rewarding target. Early season is prime time for woodies before they migrate south. They decoy well to small spreads in intimate settings, and their unique whistle call is unmistakable. Many hunters consider bagging a wood duck drake one of the highlights of any waterfowl season.
