Barry Buckland
Sandy River Guide Service offers professionally guided fishing trips on Oregon’s legendary Sandy River, just minutes from Portland and surrounded by a rare blend of accessible water and wild surroundings. Led by Barry Buckland, a licensed guide with 27 years of experience and more than four decades fishing salmon and steelhead, each trip is built around local knowledge, safety, and time on productive water.
Trips are conducted from a large, modern Clackamax drift boat designed specifically for river fishing. This non-motorized drift boat allows quiet movement through shallow sections during low water months, opening access to stretches of the Sandy River many motorized boats cannot reach. All trips are private, fully guided, and include rods, reels, tackle, bait, ice, and fish cleaning for legal harvest.
Sandy River Guide Service specializes in summer Sandy River fishing trips from June through October, targeting summer steelhead, Chinook salmon, and Coho salmon depending on seasonal runs. Half-day, three-quarter-day, and full-day options are available, making these trips ideal for families, seniors, first-time anglers, and experienced fishermen alike. Shorter trips are especially popular for guests who want quality fishing time without committing to a full day on the water.
Guide Barry grew up fishing Oregon rivers with family and developed a lifelong focus on salmon and steelhead. After winning a local tournament as a non-guide, he earned his guide license and began sharing his home river with others. His deep understanding of river conditions, fish movement, and seasonal timing helps guests fish efficiently while learning about the Sandy River’s history, wildlife, and surrounding landscape near Mount Hood.
Located near Troutdale and Gresham, these guided fishing trips are among the best options for anglers searching for the best summer steelhead river near Portland. Whether you prefer drift fishing, spinning gear, or fly fishing techniques, trips are tailored to your experience level and goals. Operation months, river conditions, and seasonal opportunities are clearly communicated so guests know exactly what to expect.

I had an amazing time fishing with Captain Barry. He was extremely knowledgeable and knew exactly where to find the fish.

I went out with Barry at the end of October and had a fantastic time! He was extremely knowledgeable, friendly, and patient. He brought along his friend Jeff, who was also great and helped make the trip even more enjoyable. I caught two keeper jack salmon, and Barry happily filleted them for me. I’m definitely planning to bring my wife next time we’re in the area. 10/10!

My daughter lost a large salmon on our last trip and was eager for her “revenge” fish. Barry recorded the entire 6-minute fight, and we got some amazing photos before releasing the wild Chinook so it could spawn. What a great trip!
