Additional DSD Boat Dives in Key Largo
So you just finished your first Discover Scuba Diving session and you're hooked? That's exactly what we love to hear at Sea Dwellers Dive Center. This additional DSD boat diving trip is designed specifically for divers like you who want to get back underwater without going through all the classroom stuff again. You'll head out on our dive boat for two more guided dives with a certified instructor, building on what you learned in your first DSD experience. At $200 per trip, it's the perfect way to extend your diving adventure while everything's still fresh in your mind. We include all the gear you need, so just bring your sense of adventure and get ready to explore more of Key Largo's world-class underwater playground.
Beneath the Surface
Key Largo sits right at the heart of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, which means you're diving some of the most protected and vibrant reefs in North America. This additional DSD trip takes you to two different dive sites where you'll spend about 30-40 minutes per dive exploring coral formations, swim-throughs, and the kind of marine life that makes the Keys famous among divers worldwide. Your instructor will stay close by, pointing out interesting creatures and helping you feel more comfortable moving through the water. Since you've already done your first DSD, you'll notice how much more relaxed you feel this second time around. The boat ride out to the reef takes about 15-20 minutes depending on conditions, giving you time to gear up and chat with your instructor about what you'll see down there. Water visibility in Key Largo typically runs 40-60 feet, sometimes even better, so you'll have crystal clear views of everything below.
Dive Brief & Gear Info
Before we splash, your instructor will give you a quick refresher on hand signals and safety procedures, but nothing as detailed as your original DSD briefing. We're using the same gear setup you learned on - mask, fins, snorkel, wetsuit, BCD, and regulator - all included in your trip price. The dive sites we visit are typically 15-25 feet deep, perfect for building confidence without pushing your comfort zone. You'll practice controlled descents and ascents, work on your buoyancy skills, and learn to move more naturally through the water. Between dives, we'll surface interval on the boat where you can grab some water, snack if you brought one, and talk about what you saw on the first dive. Your instructor will use this time to give you tips for the second dive and answer any questions that came up. The whole trip runs about 3-4 hours from dock to dock, with roughly an hour of actual bottom time split between both dives. Since this is a continuation program, we can move at a slightly faster pace than a first-time DSD, letting you see more reef and marine life.
Marine Life You'll See
The reefs around Key Largo are home to some of Florida's most colorful and accessible marine life. Parrotfish are everywhere here, and you'll hear them crunching on coral long before you see their bright blue and green bodies gliding past. These fish can grow up to two feet long and play a huge role in keeping the reef healthy by eating algae off the coral. They're active year-round but seem especially bold during summer months when water temperatures hit the high 70s and low 80s. What makes parrotfish so fun to watch is how they completely ignore divers - you can get surprisingly close for photos.
Yellowtail snapper are another Key Largo staple that new divers love encountering. These sleek silver fish with bright yellow tails travel in schools of 20-50 individuals, often approaching divers out of curiosity. They're most active during late spring and summer, though you'll find them here year-round. Yellowtails typically hang out in the mid-water column above the reef, making them perfect subjects for practicing your buoyancy control while watching their behavior. They're quick but predictable in their movements, darting away when you get too close but circling back within minutes.
Keep your eyes open for green sea turtles, especially around the coral heads and sandy patches between reefs. These ancient mariners can weigh 200-300 pounds and live over 80 years, making every turtle encounter feel special. Green turtles are most commonly spotted during summer months when they're actively feeding on seagrass beds, but Key Largo's warm waters mean turtle sightings happen year-round. What new divers find amazing is how graceful these massive animals are underwater, gliding effortlessly through the water column with just occasional fin strokes. Your instructor will teach you proper turtle etiquette - maintaining distance and letting them approach you rather than chasing them.
Plan Your Next Dive
This additional DSD boat diving experience gives you the perfect bridge between your first underwater adventure and potentially pursuing your Open Water certification. Many divers who take these follow-up trips realize they want to continue their diving education, and the skills you practice here will transfer directly to any future training. The confidence you build on these two additional dives, combined with the marine life encounters and reef exploration, often seals the deal for people who weren't sure if scuba diving was really for them. At $200 for two guided boat dives with all gear included, you're getting top-rated instruction and access to some of the Caribbean's best diving without leaving Florida waters. Book your additional DSD trip while your first experience is still fresh - most divers find the second time underwater even better than the first.
