Lobster Charters in Puerto Rico | 4 Hour Trip
If you've ever wanted to learn how locals catch fresh lobster straight from Puerto Rico's crystal-clear waters, this hands-on charter cruise is exactly what you're looking for. We'll take you out to the shallow waters off southwest Puerto Rico where Caribbean spiny lobsters hang out in rocky crevices and coral formations. This isn't your typical sightseeing cruise – you'll be diving down with us to learn traditional free-diving techniques that Puerto Rican fishermen have used for generations. The whole experience runs about 4 hours, perfect for couples or small groups who want something totally different from the usual beach day. Our captain Frank knows these waters like the back of his hand and will teach you everything from proper breath-holding techniques to spotting the best lobster hideouts.
What to Expect on the Water
This top-rated lobster cruise starts at $400 for two people, and if you're having such a good time you want to extend the trip, we charge just $100 for each extra hour. We'll motor out to some of the best lobster grounds along Puerto Rico's southwest coast, where the water stays warm year-round and visibility can reach 80+ feet on a good day. The shallow reefs here are perfect for beginners – most of our diving happens in 10-25 feet of water, so you won't need any special certification. Frank will start with a safety briefing on deck, then demonstrate proper free-diving form before you even get in the water. We keep groups small (just 2 guests max) so you get personalized instruction the whole time. The boat has plenty of shade, fresh water for rinsing, and a cooler to keep your catch fresh. Don't worry about bringing anything – we provide masks, snorkels, fins, and diving gloves to protect your hands from the rocky bottom.
Free-Diving Techniques & Gear
Learning to free-dive for lobster is way more technique than strength. Frank will show you how to hyperventilate properly to extend your breath-hold time, plus the best body positioning for efficient dives. Most people can learn to stay down for 30-45 seconds after just a few tries. We use traditional tickle sticks (basically long, thin rods) to coax lobsters out of their hiding spots – it's all about patience and gentle movements. The lobsters here are Caribbean spiny lobsters, which don't have big claws like their Maine cousins, so you can grab them by the body once they're out in the open. We'll teach you how to measure them properly since Puerto Rico has strict size limits to protect breeding populations. The rocky bottom and coral heads can be sharp, so we always dive with thick gloves and recommend staying close to your guide until you get comfortable reading the underwater terrain. Most of our best lobster spots are in 15-20 feet of water around natural coral formations where the lobsters like to set up shop during the day.

Caribbean Spiny Lobster
The Caribbean spiny lobster is what you'll be targeting on this cruise, and these guys are completely different from the clawed lobsters most people know from New England waters. They can grow up to 15 inches long and weigh several pounds, though the average catch runs 8-12 inches. What makes them tricky to catch is their lightning-fast backward swimming – they use their powerful tail to shoot backward into crevices when threatened. During the day, they hide in coral heads, rocky overhangs, and small caves, which is why free-diving works so well here. You can spot them by their long, spiny antennae sticking out from hiding spots. The best time to target them is actually during daylight hours when they're tucked into predictable spots – at night they roam the reef feeding, making them much harder to locate. Puerto Rico's lobster season runs from October through March, perfectly timed with the cooler, calmer winter months when diving conditions are at their best. What guests love most about catching these lobsters is how active and challenging they are – you really have to outsmart them rather than just overpowering them. Plus, the meat is incredibly sweet and firm, perfect for grilling right on the beach after your cruise.
Time to Book Your Spot
This world-class lobster cruise fills up fast, especially during peak season from December through February when the lobsters are most active and the weather's perfect. Frank's been running these trips for years and has built up a solid reputation among locals and visitors who want the real Puerto Rican lobster experience. You'll head home with fresh lobster that we'll clean and package for you, plus new skills you can use anywhere in the Caribbean. The combination of learning traditional techniques, exploring some of the island's most beautiful shallow reefs, and catching your own dinner makes this a customer favorite that people talk about long after they get home. Remember to book early since we only take 2 guests per trip – it's the only way to guarantee everyone gets plenty of hands-on instruction and personal attention from our guide. Arrive on time, bring sun protection, and get ready for 4 hours of the most fun you can have learning something completely new on Puerto Rico's stunning southwest coast.
