Gary Dubiel, Guide at Spec Fever Guide Service

Captain Gary Dubiel's fishing journey began at the age of eight in Western Pennsylvania, where he learned fly tying and fishing from his father. Early on, he fished for trout in rivers and streams, and bass and panfish in lakes. His fascination with saltwater fly fishing emerged in the late 1970s during trips to the Outer Banks, which eventually led him to relocate to North Carolina and start his guiding career. He named his service "Spec Fever" after his enthusiasm for speckled seatrout and offers specialized trips for redfish, stripers, false albacore, and other local species. With over two decades of guiding experience, Gary is well-versed in his field.

Gary is known for his innovations in fishing techniques. He was instrumental in popularizing the use of popping corks for North Carolina's giant red drum, transforming a nighttime bait fishery into a successful daytime artificial lure fishery. He further advanced the sport by inventing the Pop-N-Fly rig, revolutionizing fly fishing for these giant reds. Recently, he has been developing an artificial lure and fly fishery for tarpon in his local waters.

A respected authority in light tackle and fly fishing, Gary has shared his knowledge through numerous articles, lectures, and appearances on fishing programs across ESPN 2, WFN, UNC-TV, NBC Sports, the Sportsman Channel, and Discovery Channel Europe. He frequently presents at major fishing events like the Saltwater Sportsman's National Seminar Series, the Fly-Fishing Show, and the Virginia Fly Fishing Festival. His innovative fly patterns have been featured in leading sports fishing publications and books. Gary holds an IGFA Fly Rod World Record for silver salmon with one of his unique fly designs.

Gary has collaborated with Rick Pope at TFO rods for nearly twenty years as a Regional and National Advisor and is now part of the rod design team at Sawgrass Rods with Collins Illich. He is also the creator of the Pop N Fly, produced by the Flymen Fishing Company. His recent involvement with Ahrex includes new product development. Gary's extensive professional network includes roles as a Brand Ambassador for Florida Fishing Products, Pro Staff positions with Rapala, Storm Lures, Sufix Fishing Line, and Regal Vise, and as a professional guide affiliated with Scientific Angler, Costa Sunglasses, Columbia Clothing, and Simms.

Capt. Gary has put me on the fish every time I have gone out with him. He has shared with me his vast knowledge on how to fish the Neuse river and surrounding waters EVERY month of the year. Last year my trip with him in January was the best trip of the year!
