Steelhead Excursions takes anglers deep into the heart of the Bulkley River, the largest tributary of the Skeena River system, renowned for offering some of the best steelhead fishing in Canada, if not the world. The river provides ideal spey casting conditions with easy wading, perfect speed and depth, and steelhead known for their aggressive surface strikes. Steelhead, widely regarded as the strongest freshwater game fish, thrive in the Bulkley, which hosts the largest population of these fish in the Skeena River drainage. Typically weighing around 12 pounds, Bulkley steelhead can range from 4 to 30 pounds, with some fish exceeding 20 pounds each season.
At Steelhead Excursions, guests enjoy comfortable lodging with six cozy bedrooms, each featuring double or queen-sized beds, and three nearby bathrooms. The relaxed atmosphere at the lodge ensures visitors feel right at home. Fishing takes place across all three sections of the Bulkley River, each with its own character. The focus is primarily on the canyon section, known for its challenging, structure-rich waters that are hard to access without experienced guides. Some days, anglers may find themselves alone on a five-mile stretch of pristine steelhead territory.
Bob and Jill Hull, the owners and pioneers of Steelhead Excursions, have been guiding in British Columbia for over 30 years. With extensive experience on rivers like the Dean, Copper, and Kispiox, Bob and Jill are well-known in the fishing community. Many guests, impressed by their expertise, return year after year. The guides at Steelhead Excursions dedicate the entire season to specific sections of the Bulkley, becoming intimately familiar with each pool and position, ensuring the best experience for guests, even in tough conditions.
In addition to expert guiding, the lodge offers a fly-tying desk and serves fresh, local meals in a relaxed, family-style setting. Northern BC’s unpredictable weather means anglers should come prepared, with layers of clothing and a full set of dry gear. Simms, Patagonia, and other manufacturers provide great waders, with felt-soled boots highly recommended for the Bulkley’s terrain. Angling licenses, including steelhead tags, can be arranged at the lodge or online to simplify the process.
