6 Hours : OBX Fishing Charters
When a half-day trip just isn't cutting it and you're itching to get after some serious fish, this 6-hour charter with Vicarious Charters is exactly what you need. We're talking about real offshore fishing here in the legendary waters off the Outer Banks, where the Gulf Stream brings in some of the Atlantic's most sought-after species. This isn't your typical inshore grind – we're heading out to the deeper water where the big boys hang out, and trust me, they're hungry.
What to Expect on the Water
Six hours gives us the freedom to really fish, and I mean really fish. We can hit multiple spots, work different depths, and chase whatever's biting that day. The OBX waters are famous for a reason – the continental shelf drops off close to shore, meaning we don't waste half the day just getting to the good stuff. You'll be fishing productive water within an hour, and from there it's game on. The boat comes rigged and ready with everything you need – rods, reels, tackle, bait, the works. All you need to worry about is bringing plenty of sunscreen (trust me on this one), some snacks and drinks to keep your energy up, and maybe a cooler if you're planning to take your catch home. The sun reflects hard off that blue water, and six hours out there will cook you if you're not prepared.
Trolling the Productive Waters
We'll be running a mix of trolling and bottom fishing depending on what the conditions and fish are telling us. Trolling is our bread and butter out here – we'll pull a spread of lures and ballyhoo behind the boat, covering water and calling in those pelagic species that cruise the offshore waters. When we mark fish or hit structure, we might drop down with some heavy tackle and work the bottom for those amberjack that love to hang around wrecks and hard bottom. The gear is all top-shelf stuff, spooled with fresh line and ready to handle whatever decides to eat. We're talking 30-50 pound class tackle that can muscle fish up from 100+ feet of water without breaking your back. The captain knows these waters like his own backyard – every wreck, every piece of structure, every temperature break where fish like to set up.
Species You'll Want to Hook
Cobia are hands down one of the most exciting fish you'll tangle with out here. These brown sharks (that's what we call them, even though they're not sharks at all) are curious, aggressive, and they fight like freight trains. Spring and fall are prime time, when they're moving along the coast in big numbers. They'll cruise right up to the boat sometimes, following rays and checking out anything that looks interesting. When one eats, you'll know it – they hit hard and make long, powerful runs that'll test your drag and your arms. Most of the cobia we see run 20-40 pounds, but don't be surprised if something bigger shows up. They're also fantastic eating, with white, flaky meat that tastes amazing on the grill.
King mackerel are the speed demons of the offshore world, and the OBX is prime king fishing territory. These fish are pure muscle wrapped in silver, and when they take off on their first run, it's like hooking a motorcycle. We typically find them in 60-120 feet of water, usually around temperature breaks or bait schools. Summer and early fall are money time for kings, when they're feeding heavily and moving in big schools. The kings we catch here average 15-25 pounds, but 30+ pounders are always a possibility. They've got razor-sharp teeth and they're not afraid to use them, so we keep the wire leaders handy. Nothing beats the sight of a big king clearing the water on a jump, trying to throw the hook.
Greater amberjack are the bulldogs of the deep, and if you want to know what a real fight feels like, tie into one of these beasts. They live around wrecks and hard bottom in 80-200 feet of water, and they use every bit of that structure to try and break you off. AJ's are year-round residents here, but spring and summer give you the best shot at the bigger fish. We're talking 40-60 pound fish that will try to drag you down to their neighborhood if you give them an inch. The key is getting them up and away from the bottom before they can wrap you around something. They're also incredible table fare – firm, white meat that's perfect for the grill or the fryer. Just be ready for a workout when you hook one.
