Extended Half Day Fishing - Pompano Beach
This 6-hour offshore adventure out of Pompano Beach gives you the best of both worlds - chasing pelagics in blue water and dropping down for some solid bottom fishing on the way back. With Who Cares Sportfishing, you're getting a crew that knows these waters like the back of their hand and won't waste time getting you on fish. We keep groups small at just 6 anglers, so everyone gets plenty of rod time and personalized attention from our experienced captains.
What to Expect on the Water
Your day starts early as we head out into the Atlantic, where the Gulf Stream brings nutrient-rich water close to shore. Depending on what Mother Nature throws at us, we'll adjust our game plan - maybe flying kites for sailfish and kingfish, trolling the temperature breaks for mahi and tuna, or following the bird action when they're working bait schools. The crew reads the water constantly, looking for color changes, current edges, and surface activity that signals feeding fish below. After working the offshore grounds for pelagic species, we'll swing by some productive deep-drop spots on the return trip. These deeper reefs and ledges hold quality snapper and grouper that'll make great table fare, giving you a mixed bag to take home.
Techniques and Tactics
We run a versatile operation that adapts to conditions and what the fish are doing. Kite fishing is a local specialty here - we'll put out live goggle-eyes or pilchards on flat lines while the kites keep baits dancing on the surface. Kings and cobia can't resist that action. When we're trolling, expect a spread of ballyhoo, bonito strips, and diving plugs covering different depths and distances behind the boat. The crew handles all the rigging, so you focus on fighting fish. For the bottom fishing portion, we'll break out heavier tackle and drop chunks of bonito or whole sardines down to structure where the grouper and snapper live. Electric reels are available if you want them - some of these deep drops are 200+ feet, and hand-cranking a big grouper from that depth will wear you out quick.
Top Catches This Season
Skipjack tuna are the bread and butter out here, especially during cooler months when they school up in huge numbers. These 8-15 pound speedsters hit trolled baits hard and put up a great scrap for their size. They're also fantastic eating when prepared right - sashimi-grade meat that rivals anything you'll buy at the market. King mackerel patrol these waters year-round, with the bigger fish showing up in fall and winter. A 20-30 pound smoker king on light tackle will test your drag and give you an arm workout you won't forget.
Mahi mahi are pure gold when we find them, usually around floating debris or weed lines where they ambush smaller fish. These beautiful fish average 10-25 pounds locally, though we see some real bulls pushing 40+ during peak season. Their acrobatic fights and excellent table quality make them a customer favorite. Cobia cruise the deeper reefs and wrecks, often following rays or sharks near the surface. These brown sharks of the fishing world grow big here - anything over 30 pounds is a trophy, and 50-pounders aren't out of the question.
Swordfish are the ultimate prize species on our longer trips. While daytime sword fishing has gained popularity, these prehistoric predators still require patience and the right conditions. When everything aligns - current, bait, and structure - hooking into a 100+ pound broadbill creates memories that last a lifetime.
