Hands On Coral Restoration Diving Experience in the Beautiful Florida Keys

I.CARE Coral Outplanting Dive — Help ICARE Plant Coral on the Reef!

12:30 PM – 4:00 PM | Departing from Key Dives, Islamorada

Dive into a meaningful underwater experience with the I.CARE Coral Outplanting Dive in the Florida Keys. This specialized dive lets certified divers participate in hands-on coral planting and reef restoration — working alongside the I.CARE team to transplant nursery corals onto Florida Keys reef sites. It's a rewarding way to combine Florida Keys scuba diving with real conservation impact.

You'll gain insight into reef ecology, help protect the ecosystem, and enjoy one of the most unique Key Largo scuba diving experiences available.

What to Expect

  • 8:30 AM — Outplanting training at the I.CARE/Key Dives shop (85960 Overseas Hwy, Islamorada, FL 33036), including a brief presentation and hands-on demonstration of safe outplanting techniques(already completed training within the past year? You can skip this step and join the boat dive directly)
  • Lunch Break — 1–2 hours between training and the dive; bring your own lunch or ask our staff for nearby restaurant suggestions
  • 12:15 PM — Boat check-in at the shop
  • 12:30 PM — Depart the dock for two dives at the outplanting site, supervised by I.CARE and Key Dives staff (all outplanting equipment provided)
  • 4:00 – 5:00 PM — Return to dock

Requirements

  • Minimum 30 logged dives, with confident buoyancy control
  • Annual I.CARE training is required for all participants, as restoration protocols are updated regularly
  • During summer, when elevated sea temperatures pause coral work, the dive shifts to sponge outplanting — which requires its own separate annual training
  • Questions about eligibility? Contact the shop before booking

Conservation & Donation

A $25 donation is required to participate in the outplanting portion of this dive.

Not Participating in Outplanting?

Certified divers are welcome to join the trip to explore the same reef site with guidance from our award-winning team, even without assisting in coral planting.

Florida Keys Coral Conservation Dive: Hands On Reef Restoration at 25 Feet

I.CARE Maintenance Dive — Help ICARE Care for Previous Coral Babies! (~25ft)

12:30 PM – 4:30 PM |

Join Key Dives for the I.CARE Maintenance Dive in the Florida Keys. This hands-on conservation dive gives certified divers the chance to check in on reefs they (or fellow divers) have helped restore — assisting with underwater maintenance, sponge and coral monitoring, and the ongoing care that keeps outplanted coral thriving.

It's a meaningful way to explore Florida Keys scuba diving while giving back to the reefs that make Key Largo diving world-renowned — and to see firsthand how the coral you help plant grows over time.

What to Expect

  • 11:00 / 11:30 AM — Required in-person training (mandatory for new participants)
  • 12:30 PM — Boat check-in
  • 12:30 – 4:30 PM — Two-tank maintenance dive with I.CARE (Island Conservation and Restoration Education)

Why It Matters

I.CARE Maintenance Dives are how previously outplanted coral gets the long-term care it needs to survive and grow. It's not just a one-time plant-and-go — ongoing monitoring and upkeep are what make restoration actually work.

Cancellation Policy

A 24-hour cancellation notice is required (72 hours during holiday periods). Cancellations inside this window forfeit the full trip cost, including your 20% deposit. If Key Dives cancels due to weather, you'll be fully refunded or rebooked at no charge.

Had a great trip. Erica was a great instructor . She understood my fears as a beginner and stayed supportive of me throughout which greatly improved my diving experience

We were immediately drawn to Key Dives because of the conservation work that they do with I-CARE and knew that we, and the marine life, would be in safe hands. The Erika’s were super helpful from day one, setting me up over the phone with my online PADI training and scheduling my open water dives so that my husband and son, more experienced divers, could be together for our last dive. My instructor, Erika N, was patient and professional. We spent day one in a pool built specifically for dive training, so there were no distractions. Day 2 we took the boat with Captain Bradley and a team of I-CARE divers, out to two dive sites for my Open Water dive 1 and 2 skills testing. The whole crew were safety first, with fun a close second. You can tell they’ve been doing this for a while. Again, Erika N was gently encouraging and gave me the confidence for my first dive. By dive four the following day, I had been assessed for all my skills and was able to have a fun family dive. Over the four dives we were blessed to see two Spotted Eagle Rays and a Great Hammerhead Shark. Also the corals and sponges have inspired me to paint more with this gorgeous blue and mauve and yellow palette, Such a privilege to have spent time with Erika N, the team, the Keys and, of course, Mamasita ocean. Would highly recommend Key Dives for novice and experienced divers wanting to get to the best dive spots and be around people that are passionate about conservation.

I've dove quite a few times here in the Keys with different dive outfits. This was my first time with Key Dives and will look foward to diving with them again. What a great crew and nice boat. Dennis B.- a.k.a. "Bondo" Merritt Island, Fl.
