Florida Keys Shallow Reef Diving Adventure
Picture yourself floating weightlessly over vibrant coral gardens just 25 feet below the surface, watching sea turtles glide past while colorful reef fish dart between the formations. Our afternoon shallow reef dives showcase the best of what makes the Florida Keys a world-class diving destination. Running from 12:30 PM to 4:30 PM, these dives are perfect for photographers wanting that perfect shot, newer divers building confidence, or experienced divers who love long bottom times exploring healthy reef systems. With sites ranging from 15-35 feet and located just minutes from our dock, you'll spend more time underwater and less time traveling to reach these stunning coral communities.
Beneath the Surface
These afternoon reef dives take you to some of Islamorada's most pristine shallow water sites, where the marine life is abundant and the coral formations are absolutely stunning. The shallow depths mean you'll get extended dive times - often 45-60 minutes per dive - allowing you to really explore and take in everything these reefs have to offer. The calm, protected waters make for easy entries and exits, while the excellent visibility lets you spot marine life from a distance. You'll visit two different reef sites during the trip, each with its own personality and resident species. Our dive masters know these reefs like the back of their hand, so they'll guide you to the best spots for wildlife encounters and point out creatures you might otherwise swim right past. The package deals make regular diving more affordable too - grab a 5-dive package for $92 per trip or a 3-dive package for $97 per trip, with discounts applied to your final dive.
Dive Brief & Gear Info
All our dives follow a 1:6 diver-to-guide ratio with our award-winning dive masters leading the way. We provide tanks and weights, plus there's a hot freshwater shower system on board for rinsing off that salt after your dives. The boat comes equipped with ice coolers and drinking water - just bring your own refillable bottle to stay hydrated between dives. After surfacing, you'll be treated to fresh fruit while sharing stories about what you saw down there. Each dive site visit includes a thorough briefing covering the reef layout, current conditions, and what marine life to keep an eye out for. The shallow depths and minimal current make these sites accessible for Open Water certified divers and above. Most divers surface with plenty of air remaining, which speaks to how relaxed and comfortable these dive profiles are. We're also proud supporters of reef conservation, donating 2% of all dive revenue toward coral restoration efforts throughout the Florida Reef Tract.
What Divers Are Saying
"Our dive master was very thorough and had an excellent eye spotting many creatures we might have missed." - Beth. "Great location for new divers looking to see a wide variety of marine life. The shallowness of the site allows for a long bottom time without concern of running out of air." - Georgios. "I have been diving for 35 years and Key Dives is one of the most professional dive shops I have ever gone to. The dive team is awesome. There is always a dive master in the water with you with no more than six divers. They point out interesting things that are in the water. They are very helpful. I can't say enough good things about them. Highly recommend for all levels of diving." - Linda.
Marine Life You'll See
Green sea turtles are the stars of these shallow reefs, and you'll often encounter them grazing on seagrass or resting under coral ledges. These gentle giants can grow up to 4 feet long and weigh over 400 pounds. They're most active during morning and late afternoon hours, making our afternoon departure time perfect for sightings. Watching a sea turtle gracefully navigate the reef is always a highlight - they're curious about divers and often allow close approach for photos. Nurse sharks are another customer favorite, typically found resting under coral overhangs or in sandy channels between reef structures. These docile sharks can reach 8-10 feet in length but are completely harmless to divers. They're year-round residents of the Keys, and spotting one always gets divers excited. The shallow reefs are also home to massive Goliath grouper, true giants of the reef that can grow over 6 feet long and weigh several hundred pounds. These prehistoric-looking fish are naturally curious and will often approach divers, creating amazing photo opportunities. Southern stingrays glide across the sandy bottom areas, their wingspan reaching up to 5 feet. They're most active in the afternoon, making them perfect encounters for our trip timing. Caribbean spiny lobsters hide in crevices during daylight hours - look for their long antennae sticking out from under coral formations. Moray eels, including green morays and spotted morays, peek out from their rocky homes throughout the reef. While they look intimidating, they're actually quite shy and only show aggression if threatened. The reef fish diversity is outstanding, with parrotfish, angelfish, butterflyfish, and wrasses creating a constant show of color and movement around every coral head.
