Discover Scuba in the Florida Keys
Ever wondered what it's like to breathe underwater? This PADI Discover Scuba experience with Key Dives gives you that first taste of life beneath the waves in one of the world's best diving destinations. Based out of Islamorada in the heart of the Florida Keys, you'll spend a full day learning the basics and exploring shallow coral reefs teeming with tropical marine life. No experience needed – just show up ready to try something completely new.
Beneath the Surface
Your underwater adventure kicks off at 8:30 AM at the Key Dives shop in Islamorada. This isn't just a quick pool session – it's a proper introduction to scuba diving that follows PADI standards. Your instructor starts by walking you through the basic equipment: mask, fins, regulator, and BCD (buoyancy control device). You'll learn essential hand signals, how to clear your mask if water gets in, and most importantly, how to breathe calmly and naturally through your regulator. The pool session gives you time to get comfortable with all this gear in a controlled environment where you can stand up anytime. After a lunch break around 10:30 AM, you'll board the dive boat at 12:30 PM for two guided ocean dives on the Florida Keys' famous coral reefs. Your instructor stays right with you the entire time, managing your depth and making sure you're comfortable as you explore these underwater gardens. Maximum depth is typically around 30 feet, perfect for beginners to see plenty of marine life without any pressure concerns.
Dive Brief & Gear Info
All your scuba gear is included – mask, fins, wetsuit, tank, regulator, and BCD. The wetsuits here are typically 3mm since the water stays warm year-round, usually between 75-82°F depending on the season. Before each ocean dive, your instructor gives you a detailed brief about the dive site, pointing out interesting features on an underwater slate and reviewing the hand signals you learned earlier. The boat captain positions you over shallow patch reefs and coral heads where the current is minimal – perfect conditions for your first ocean dives. You'll practice your buoyancy skills while exploring, learning to hover just above the coral without touching anything. The visibility in the Keys is usually excellent, often 60-80 feet, so you'll have crystal clear views of everything around you. Each dive lasts about 30-40 minutes, giving you plenty of time to relax into the experience and really start enjoying the underwater world.
Marine Life You'll See
The shallow reefs around Islamorada are like underwater cities packed with marine life. Parrotfish are everywhere – these colorful characters spend their days crunching on coral and algae, and you'll hear them munching away as you swim by. They're not shy around divers and come in brilliant blues, greens, and yellows that pop against the coral backdrop. Yellowtail snapper cruise the reefs in schools, their bright yellow tails flashing as they dart between coral heads. These guys are curious about divers and often approach for a closer look, making for great photo opportunities.
French angelfish patrol their territories in pairs, their black bodies marked with bright yellow stripes. They're one of the larger fish you'll commonly see, sometimes reaching over a foot long, and they move with a graceful, almost regal presence around the reef. Look for them near cleaning stations where smaller fish pick parasites off their scales. Green moray eels hide in the coral crevices during the day – your guide might point one out tucked into a ledge with just its head visible. Despite their intimidating appearance, they're completely harmless to divers and actually quite shy.
Sergeant majors are the busy bees of the reef – these small, yellow-striped fish aggressively defend their territory and aren't afraid of divers much larger than them. During certain times of year, you might see them tending their purple egg patches on the coral. The coral itself tells its own story, with massive brain coral heads, delicate sea fans swaying in the current, and colorful sponges adding splashes of red, orange, and purple to the reef landscape.
