Wreck Trek: Three-Tank Deep Dive Adventure
Ready to explore some of Key Largo's most legendary shipwrecks? Key Dives' annual Wreck Trek is hands down one of the best deep diving experiences in the Florida Keys. This isn't your typical two-tank morning dive – we're talking about a full-day adventure that takes you to three different wrecks, each with its own personality and marine life community. You'll be diving depths from 80 to 120 feet, so this trip is designed for advanced divers who are comfortable with deep water and potential currents. The day runs from 7:45 AM check-in until around 3:00 PM, giving you plenty of bottom time to really explore these underwater monuments.
What Makes This Dive Special
The Wreck Trek hits three of the most popular artificial reefs in the area: the Spiegel Grove, either the Duane or Bibb, and the Eagle. Each wreck tells a different story and attracts different marine life, so you're getting variety that keeps every dive fresh. The Spiegel Grove is a massive 510-foot Navy ship that's become a thriving ecosystem since it was sunk in 2002. The Duane and Bibb are both Coast Guard cutters from the 1930s that now serve as home to countless fish species. The Eagle, a 287-foot freighter, sits perfectly upright and offers some of the best swim-through opportunities you'll find anywhere. All three sites require nitrox for the extended bottom times, but don't worry if you're not nitrox certified yet – the breathing gas is included in your trip cost, and Key Dives can get you certified before your dive date.
Dive Conditions & Gear Setup
These are serious dives, so you'll need your Advanced Open Water certification or Deep Specialty to join us. The wrecks sit in 80-120 feet of water, and depending on Gulf Stream conditions, you might encounter some current. That's why we strongly recommend bringing dive gloves – they'll help you hold onto mooring lines and navigate around the structures safely. The boat provides fresh water rinses, ice, and drinking water, but bring your own refillable bottle to stay hydrated between dives. Pack a good lunch since you'll be out for the full day, and don't forget reef-safe sunscreen to protect both your skin and the coral communities growing on these wrecks. A dry bag for your phone and keys is essential, and consider bringing a surface marker buoy if you have one – it's always good practice on deeper dives where currents can separate you from the group.

Marine Life You'll Encounter
The wreck sites around Key Largo have become some of the most biodiverse artificial reefs in the Atlantic. Goliath grouper are the real stars here – these gentle giants can grow over 400 pounds and love hanging out in the shadows of the wrecks. They're most active during summer months and completely harmless, but their size will definitely get your attention. You'll often find them resting under overhangs or inside the larger compartments of the ships. Barracuda schools are another highlight, especially around the Spiegel Grove where they form massive silver tornadoes that can include hundreds of fish. They tend to be more active in the morning hours, so our early start time puts you right in their peak activity window. Green moray eels have made homes throughout all three wrecks, and while they look intimidating, they're actually quite shy and will usually retreat deeper into the structure if you approach slowly. The artificial reef environment has also attracted incredible coral growth over the years, with soft corals, sponges, and hard corals creating colorful gardens that rival natural reef systems.
