Lake Ray Hubbard Bowfishing Adventure
Ready to try something different on the water? Our Lake Ray Hubbard bowfishing trips put you right in the middle of the action with guaranteed fish encounters or your next trip is completely free. We're talking about a whole different kind of fishing here – one where you'll be standing on deck with a bow in your hands, targeting some of the biggest rough fish in North Texas waters. This isn't your typical rod-and-reel fishing trip. It's fast-paced, visual hunting that gets your adrenaline pumping as you watch massive carp and gar cruise just below the surface.
What to Expect on the Water
When you step onto our boat at Lake Ray Hubbard, you're getting the full professional setup. We run top-tier Sucker Puncher bows – these aren't toy store specials, but serious bowfishing equipment that'll put your arrow exactly where you aim it. Our Swamp Eye Outrigger LED lighting system turns night into day, illuminating the water so you can spot every fish movement. The whole rig is designed for success, and we've got space for up to 6 people total, though our standard trip covers 2 anglers. Kids are more than welcome – there's nothing like seeing a young angler nail their first gar with a bow. The lake stays active year-round, but our night trips really shine when the water temperature is right and fish are moving shallow. We'll position the boat in prime spots where carp, buffalo fish, and alligator gar gather to feed.
Bow Setup & Shooting Tips
Bowfishing gear is specialized, and we've got everything dialed in for Lake Ray Hubbard conditions. The Sucker Puncher bows we use are designed specifically for shooting fish – they're powerful enough to penetrate tough scales but forgiving enough for beginners to handle. Each bow is rigged with a reel system that lets you retrieve your arrow and fish quickly. The arrows have barbed points that lock into the fish once you make contact. Don't worry if you've never shot a bow before – the learning curve is pretty quick, and most folks are connecting with fish within their first few shots. The key is leading your target since water refracts light and makes fish appear in slightly different positions than where they actually are. We'll coach you through the aiming process and help you understand how to compensate for depth and angle. The LED lighting creates shadows and highlights that make it easier to judge distance and fish size.

Prime Target Species
Carp are your bread-and-butter target on Lake Ray Hubbard, and these fish put up a serious fight once you stick them. We're talking about fish that commonly run 10-20 pounds, with some monsters pushing 30 pounds or more. They cruise the shallows at night feeding on vegetation and small invertebrates, making them perfect bowfishing targets. Carp are active year-round but really concentrate in fishable water during warmer months when they move up to spawn. What makes them exciting to shoot is their size and the way they react when hit – they'll thrash and run, testing your equipment and your nerves. Plus, they're doing the lake ecosystem a favor by removing these invasive species.
Alligator gar are the trophy fish that every bowfisher wants to connect with on Lake Ray Hubbard. These prehistoric-looking fish can stretch over 6 feet long and weigh 100 pounds or more. They're ambush predators that cruise slowly near the surface, especially during evening and night hours. Gar have thick, armor-like scales that require a solid hit to penetrate, but once you stick one, you're in for a battle. They're surprisingly strong and will test every piece of equipment you're using. Lake Ray Hubbard has a healthy population of both alligator gar and smaller longnose gar, giving you multiple opportunities throughout the night. The best part about targeting gar is that they're often visible at the surface, rolling and gulping air, which makes them easier to spot under our lighting system.
Buffalo fish round out the main species we target, and they're often the most cooperative when it comes to giving you shooting opportunities. These native fish can grow quite large – we regularly see buffalo in the 15-25 pound range – and they tend to travel in small groups. They're bottom feeders that will move into shallower water to forage, especially during low-light periods. Buffalo fish are shaped similarly to carp but have smaller mouths and different fin positioning. They're excellent table fare if you decide to keep some fish, though many of our clients practice catch-and-release. What makes buffalo fish great targets for newer bowfishers is that they move predictably and don't spook as easily as some other species.
