Private Key Largo Diving & Snorkel Charter
When you want to explore the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary without the crowds, Sea Dwellers Dive Center's private charters deliver exactly what serious divers and snorkelers are looking for. Based in Key Largo, we take groups of up to 28 people to two prime locations where the coral reefs are healthy and the visibility stays consistently good year-round. This isn't your typical cattle-boat operation - it's a custom experience where you control the pace, the sites, and who's sharing the water with you.
Beneath the Surface
Your charter runs as a proper two-tank dive with 65 minutes of bottom time at each location. We're talking about real dive time here, not the rushed 45-minute sessions you get on crowded boats. The Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary protects some of the most accessible coral reef diving in North America, and from Key Largo, we can hit both shallow patch reefs perfect for newer divers and deeper walls that challenge advanced divers. Water temps stay comfortable in the mid-70s during winter and climb to the low 80s in summer, so you're not dealing with thick wetsuits. The visibility typically runs 60-80 feet, sometimes pushing 100 on those perfect days when the Gulf Stream cooperates. Mixed groups work great on these charters since snorkelers can explore the same reefs from the surface while divers go deeper to check out the larger formations and swim-throughs.
Dive Brief & Gear Info
We supply all your tanks and weights, plus full snorkel setups for anyone staying topside. The boat carries standard aluminum 80s, but if you prefer steel tanks or need something bigger, let us know when you book. Our gear gets serviced regularly and we stock multiple mask sizes since a good seal makes or breaks your dive. Before each site, you'll get a proper briefing covering the bottom composition, current patterns, and entry/exit procedures. Most of our locations feature mooring balls, so you're not dealing with anchor damage to the reef or drift diving unless that's specifically what your group wants. The $1,500 base rate covers your boat time, basic gear, and fuel - pretty straightforward pricing without hidden fees. If your group wants a dedicated divemaster in the water, we arrange that separately at private rates. The 50% deposit locks in your date, and Florida weather usually cooperates, but we'll work with you on rescheduling if conditions turn rough.
Marine Life You'll See
The coral formations around Key Largo support an impressive variety of marine life that changes with the seasons and time of day. Goliath grouper gather near the deeper ledges from June through October, and seeing a 400-pound fish cruise past never gets old. These gentle giants got protection in the 1990s and their comeback story is one of the best conservation successes in Florida waters. They're curious about divers but keep a respectful distance - perfect for photos without aggressive behavior. Green moray eels live in the reef crevices year-round, often poking their heads out during day dives. Despite their intimidating appearance, they're generally peaceful unless provoked. Night dives reveal their hunting behavior as they patrol the reef for sleeping fish. Caribbean reef sharks patrol the outer reefs, especially during summer months when baitfish schools move through the area. These sleek predators typically measure 4-6 feet and show little interest in divers, but their presence indicates a healthy ecosystem. Loggerhead sea turtles cruise through regularly, particularly around the deeper sites where they feed on sponges and soft corals. Hawksbill turtles also make appearances, though they're less common. Both species nest on Florida beaches from May through September, so summer diving often provides the best turtle encounters. The reef fish populations include massive schools of yellowtail snapper, parrotfish that keep the coral clean by grazing on algae, and colorful angelfish that make every photo pop with tropical colors.
Plan Your Next Dive
Private charters book up fast during peak season from December through April, so plan ahead if you're targeting specific dates. The flexibility of choosing your own sites and schedule makes this perfect for dive clubs, family reunions, or groups with mixed experience levels. Advanced divers appreciate being able to request specific locations like the Spiegel Grove wreck or deeper wall dives, while beginners get the extra attention they need without holding back a larger group. The 28-person capacity handles most groups comfortably, and smaller parties often find the per-person cost reasonable when split among friends. Key Largo's location puts you within easy reach of both the shallow patch reefs and the deeper outer reef systems, maximizing your options based on conditions and group preferences. Book your charter with Sea Dwellers Dive Center and experience the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary the way it's meant to be explored - at your own pace with your own people.
