Ready to take your diving to the next level? Florida's crystal-clear waters and diverse dive sites make it the perfect playground for advancing your scuba skills. Our Advanced Open Water course isn't just another certification – it's your ticket to exploring deeper wrecks, mastering underwater navigation, and building the confidence you need for more challenging dives. Whether you're eyeing those famous Florida Keys wrecks or planning future dive trips around the world, this course will get you there safely and skillfully.
Beneath the Surface
This isn't your typical classroom-heavy course. We're talking real-world diving where you'll actually use the skills that matter. Over the course of several dives, you'll work through deep diving techniques, perfect your buoyancy control, and learn navigation skills that'll make you the diver everyone wants as a buddy. Florida's unique geography gives us access to everything from shallow coral reefs to deep offshore wrecks, so you'll experience different environments and challenges. The one-on-one instruction means your instructor can focus entirely on your specific needs and goals. Maybe you're still working on that perfect neutral buoyancy, or perhaps you want to nail those navigation patterns – either way, you'll get personalized attention that group courses just can't match. Each dive builds on the last, so by the end, you'll notice a real difference in how comfortable and controlled you feel underwater.
Dive Brief & Gear Info
Your Advanced Open Water certification involves five adventure dives, with deep diving and underwater navigation being mandatory components. The deep dive takes you down to 100 feet – deeper than your Open Water certification allows – where you'll learn about nitrogen narcosis, bottom time management, and the importance of proper ascent rates. During navigation dives, you'll master compass use, natural navigation techniques, and learn to find your way back to the boat or shore using underwater landmarks. Florida's diverse sites mean we can choose locations that match your comfort level while still challenging you to grow. You'll use standard recreational scuba gear, but we'll also introduce you to specialty equipment like underwater slates for navigation plotting and deeper dive planning tools. The remaining three specialty dives can focus on areas like fish identification, wreck diving, or drift diving – all skills that'll serve you well in Florida's waters. Each dive site is chosen specifically to teach certain skills, so you're not just diving pretty spots, you're actually learning in environments that reinforce what you need to know.
Marine Life You'll See
Florida's waters host an amazing variety of marine life that makes every dive memorable. Goliath grouper are the gentle giants you'll likely encounter, especially around wrecks and ledges. These massive fish can reach over 400 pounds and 8 feet long, and they're surprisingly curious about divers. They're most active during summer months when they gather to spawn, making encounters almost guaranteed. Despite their intimidating size, they're completely harmless and often approach divers closely, creating those jaw-dropping photo opportunities that'll make your friends back home jealous. Their bold nature and prehistoric appearance make them a favorite among both new and experienced divers.
Nurse sharks are another Florida staple that perfectly demonstrates why advancing your skills matters. These docile bottom-dwellers rest in caves and under ledges during the day, and with improved buoyancy control from your advanced training, you'll be able to hover nearby without disturbing them or damaging the reef. They're most commonly seen year-round, growing up to 10 feet long, and their calm demeanor makes them perfect for practicing your photography skills. What divers love most is how these sharks show that not all shark encounters need to get your heart racing – they're proof that sharks are generally more afraid of you than you are of them.
Sea turtles frequent Florida's reefs and grass beds, and your enhanced diving skills will help you observe them properly. Loggerheads are the most common, especially from May through October during nesting season. These ancient mariners can live over 80 years and weigh up to 400 pounds. With better buoyancy control and awareness from your advanced training, you'll learn to maintain proper distance while still enjoying meaningful encounters. Turtles are sensitive to rapid movements and poor buoyancy, so the skills you develop in this course directly translate to better wildlife interactions and more ethical diving practices.
