Winchester Bay Salmon Charter: 5-Hour Shared Trip
Looking for some serious salmon action on the Oregon coast? This shared 5-hour charter out of Winchester Bay puts you right where the fish are biting. Captain Travis and his crew know these waters like the back of their hands, and they'll work their tails off to get you on salmon whether we're fishing the Umpqua River or heading out to the Pacific. With a 2-salmon limit per person, you've got solid chances to fill your cooler while soaking up some of the best fishing scenery Oregon has to offer. Don't worry about gear – we've got you covered with top-shelf tackle that's proven to produce.
What to Expect on the Water
This isn't your average fishing trip. We're talking about a full 5-hour charter where the captain makes the call on whether to hit the Umpqua River or push out to ocean waters based on where the salmon are running hottest that day. The beauty of this setup is flexibility – if the bar conditions are sketchy, we can work the river systems. If the ocean's calling and the salmon are stacked up offshore, that's where we'll point the bow. You'll be sharing the boat with other anglers, which keeps costs down and often makes for a more social, fun atmosphere on deck. The crew provides all the rods, reels, tackle, and bait you'll need, so just bring yourself and maybe some snacks for the trip.
Trolling Techniques & Tackle
We're primarily trolling for these salmon, which means we'll be pulling lures and bait behind the boat at varying speeds and depths until we find what triggers the bite. The crew runs everything from herring behind flashers to spoons and plugs, adjusting based on conditions and what the fish are responding to that day. You'll be using downriggers to get your offerings down to where the salmon are cruising, typically anywhere from 20 to 80 feet depending on the season and water temperature. The deck hand stays busy keeping fresh bait on hooks, adjusting spreads, and making sure everyone's lines are fishing clean. When a rod loads up, it's game on – these Pacific salmon don't give up easy, and you'll feel every head shake and run they make.
Customer Stories
"We had a great time today with Captain Travis and his Deck hand. They really worked hard to get us on the fish, despite the rough seas. Plus we all limited out on crab. I would totally recommend going out with SOA charters if you want a great experience fishing the ocean. Thank you again for the great trip Capt. Travis." - Howard
"Travis and his baiter did an excellent job. They worked hard at finding the best spots to catch fish on our excursion, they kept the bait fresh and changed tackle as needed. Both were personable, friendly, helpful, and skilled at their jobs. The boat was clean and well kept. Travis even extended our trip to ensure everyone had the chance to catch a fish despite a front moving in and making it more challenging to get salmon to bite. They kept up with river and bar changes to ensure we had a safe and enjoyable trip. Unfortunately, the bar was closed by the Coast Guard for ships smaller than 40 ft in length due to water conditions which prevented us from having more opportunity to catch fish. I highly recommend the charter. No children were on the charter we took so I can not speak to how well they do with children but they were very helpful to both novice and experienced fishers." - Judith
Top Catches This Season
Chinook salmon are the main target on these Winchester Bay charters, and for good reason. These bruisers, also called King salmon, are the largest Pacific salmon species and put up fights that'll test your arms and your drag system. Winchester Bay Chinook typically run anywhere from 15 to 40 pounds, with the occasional beast pushing even bigger numbers. They're most active during the spring and fall runs, when they're either heading upriver to spawn or feeding heavily in preparation. What makes Chinook so special is their power – they'll make long, blistering runs and use their bulk to try to wrap you around anything they can find. The meat is rich, oily, and perfect for the grill or smoker.
Coho salmon, or silvers as the locals call them, are another favorite target when they're in the area. These fish might not have the raw size of Chinook, but they make up for it with pure athleticism. Coho are jumpers – hook one and you're likely to see some serious aerial acrobatics as they try to throw the hook. They typically run 8 to 15 pounds in these waters and are absolutely delicious on the table. Silvers tend to be more aggressive feeders than Chinook, often hitting lures with authority that'll nearly rip the rod out of your hands. They school up tighter than Kings, so when you find them, the action can be fast and furious.
