A Little Something About Me

I got into fishing when I was young because of my father. We would go out to a cottage on Lake Erie owned by my father’s friend. Though my father didn’t have a boat, he had an old Evinrude 6hp Outboard Motor which we would hang on the stern of a 16-foot aluminum row boat that came with the cottage. It was just sitting upside down, waiting for someone to launch her. Once we were all set, we headed out to the lake to catch some yellow perch. Because of my father’s love and willingness for fishing, we made a memory of a lifetime that day; and a new generation of fishermen began.

As you can assume, my father’s love for fishing was passed onto me and the love still thrives to this day. I ended up establishing my own fishing guide service, Fishin’ Jack Charters based in Lakeside Marblehead, Ohio. I got inspired to set up this business because I believe there is nothing better than spending a day on the water, enjoying my time, and celebrating life in Mother Nature’s glory. I think a day fishing is better than any day at work - so I made it part of my work.

The Art of Patience and Making Friends

I love sharing memorable and fond moments with everyone through fishing. My dad putting that Evinrude to use when I was younger has left me with so many fishing experiences I’ll never forget.

One of my favorite fishing experiences has to be with this man named Ron, who is a character in his own right. I recall him telling me from the beginning that he may test my patience (what he actually said I cannot print). Funnily, Ron proved himself worthy of the description he placed for himself.

During the trip, a rod went off with a huge pull indicating a chance for the biggest fish for the mini tournament going on between their six-person boat group. Ron thought he had a big sheepshead on the line and began to jerk and thrash the rod around as if to try and lose the fish. I kept telling him to take it easy because the fish could be the one we're working for that day. The sheepshead seemed to be prompting me to tell him exactly what he said I would by the end of my day with him.

Later, behind the boat, a huge mouth full of teeth greeted him with a huge smile as I netted a 30" beauty to win 1st prize in the three-day tournament. I had my ‘I told you so’ moment with Ron and he smiled. Because of that chaotic yet fun experience, we are still friends today.

Fish I Like to Look For and Where

When I was growing up, I was lucky that I got to fish at every pond, creek, and river in the Toledo area. Thank God we also had friends who had cottages on Lake Erie. There was also a place called Lakemont Landing in the Jerusalem Township where you can rent some very stable little red fishing boats.

For me, nothing can beat Lake Erie. There’s a reason why it is one of North America's and the United States' five Great Lakes and inland waters. It’s the place to be if you’re looking for the best sport fishing in Ohio; especially with its vast array of freshwater species. You’ll find over a hundred species in the lake’s diverse ecosystem, including salmon species, carp, bass species, and trout species. At this time, walleye is by far my favorite fish to target. That’s because the hatch rate is historically at its best now, providing bountiful resources of trophy gators (walleye) waiting for you.

Under my fishing guide service, I also like to target American yellow perch along with the beloved and sought-after walleye. Local waters in Ohio are brimming with these fish. You can expect Lake Erie provides you the chance to catch some monster walleye and yellow perch!
