Private Umpqua River Fishing Charter
The Umpqua River is hands down one of Oregon's most productive fishing destinations, and this private 8-hour charter puts you right in the sweet spots where the big fish hang out. You'll have the entire boat to yourself, which means we can move at your pace, spend extra time on promising holes, and really dial in your technique without worrying about other anglers. Whether you're just getting your feet wet or you've been chasing fish for decades, this trip is designed around what you want to accomplish on the water.
What to Expect on the Water
We'll launch early and spend the day working the river's prime holding water, from deep pools where steelhead stage to the gravelly runs that salmon love. The Umpqua has incredible diversity - one minute you're drifting a deep hole under towering Douglas firs, the next you're working a shallow riffle with perfect current breaks. I'll handle the boat positioning and reading the water, so you can focus on your presentation and fighting fish. The scenery is killer too, with old-growth forests lining the banks and osprey working the same waters we are. This isn't a cattle-boat operation - it's just you, me, and some of the best salmon and steelhead water on the West Coast.
Gear Setup & River Tactics
We'll be running spinning gear and conventional setups depending on conditions and what the fish are telling us. I provide all the tackle, from drift rigs to plugs to spinners, plus I tie all your leaders and swap out gear as needed throughout the day. The Umpqua fishes differently than a lot of rivers - it's got that perfect combination of deep water and good current that lets us use multiple techniques. We might start the morning pulling plugs through the deeper pools, then switch to drift fishing with cured roe or sand shrimp when we find fish holding in specific spots. I'll teach you how to read your rod tip, feel the bottom, and detect those subtle takes that separate successful anglers from guys who just chuck and hope. Every technique we use is proven on this water, and I'll explain why we're using each approach so you can apply it on your own trips.
Species You'll Want to Hook
Chinook salmon are the kings of the Umpqua, and for good reason. These bruisers average 15-25 pounds, with plenty of 30+ pounders mixed in during peak season. Fall is prime time when they're fresh from the ocean and full of fight. What makes Chinook so special here is how hard they hit and how they use the river's current and structure to their advantage. When you hook into a big king in moving water, you're in for a battle - they'll peel line, jump, and do everything they can to wrap you around a boulder or fallen tree. The best part is how these fish eat. Unlike some salmon that get finicky, Umpqua Chinook are aggressive and will slam a properly presented bait or lure. We target them in the deeper holes and along current seams where they stage before moving upstream.
Rainbow trout, specifically the sea-run steelhead that make the Umpqua famous, are pound-for-pound some of the strongest fish you'll ever tangle with. These aren't your average rainbow - we're talking chrome-bright fish that average 6-12 pounds and fight like they're twice that size. Winter steelhead are here from December through March, while summer fish show up from June through October. What sets Umpqua steelhead apart is their acrobatic fighting style and how they use every inch of the river. They'll make long runs, jump repeatedly, and test every knot in your system. These fish are incredibly smart too - they've seen plenty of lures and baits, so presentation matters. When everything comes together and you feel that distinctive steelhead take, followed by a silver missile launching out of the water, you'll understand why anglers become obsessed with these fish.
