What to Expect on the Water
Your 8-hour adventure starts bright and early from Haulover Inlet, one of Miami's premier fishing access points. The boat heads out to the productive offshore grounds where the continental shelf drops off and the real action begins. Captain Alex adapts the game plan based on current conditions, seasonal patterns, and what's been biting lately. Some days we're running and gunning for fast-moving pelagics like Mahi and Wahoo, other days we're working the reef structure for snapper and grouper. The beauty of a full day trip is having the time to mix it up and chase whatever's hot. You'll cover serious water, hit multiple spots, and get a true taste of what Miami offshore fishing is all about. The crew handles all the heavy lifting when it comes to rigging, re-baiting, and keeping the spread looking perfect, so you can focus on what matters most - fighting fish.
Techniques & Tackle
This charter runs the full spectrum of offshore techniques depending on what we're targeting. Trolling is the bread and butter for covering water and locating schools of Mahi, King Mackerel, and Wahoo. We'll have a spread of baits and lures working behind the boat at different depths and distances to maximize our chances. When we mark fish on the sounder or hit a floating debris line, we switch gears to drifting with live bait or working jigs and poppers. Bottom fishing comes into play when we're working structure for snapper and grouper - dropping baits down to 60-150 feet depending on the spot. All tackle is provided, from the heavy trolling rods for big kings and wahoo down to the lighter spinning gear for working live baits. The boat carries a full arsenal of lures, weights, and terminal tackle, plus a live well system to keep bait fresh throughout the day. Circle hooks are used for most applications to improve fish survival and comply with regulations.
Customer Stories
"Captain Alex is a champ. Super friendly guy with a great attitude. He immediately put us on fish and he was just as excited with every catch as we were. Great time on his boat. Will definitely book him and his boat again. 💪🏼" - John
"We are ocean fishing novices and Captain Alex was patient and encouraging with my kids. Within 30 minutes of reaching our first fishing location my son hooked and landed a sail fish. He never stopped trying different tactics and different areas to get everyone in our party of 5 hooked on!!! We all caught fish. Bonita, black tuna, yellow jacks, red and yellow snaper, and a strawberry grouper. Some we were able to keep some we had to throw back. At the end of the trip Captain Alex filleted fish, for us and even made sashimi for us with the black tuna! couldn't have asked for a better day highly recommend Captain Alex at Bearcut Bandit Charters!!!" - Scott
Species You'll Want to Hook
Grey Snapper are one of the most reliable and rewarding targets in Biscayne Bay and the nearshore reefs. These smart fish hang around structure in 40-100 feet of water and put up a solid fight pound for pound. They're most active during dawn and dusk periods, making them perfect for morning or afternoon portions of the full day trip. What makes grey snapper so popular is their combination of fight and flavor - they're excellent table fare with firm white meat that's perfect for ceviche or grilling. Schools can be located year-round, but the bigger breeding-size fish typically show up during summer months when regulations allow harvest.
King Mackerel are the speed demons of Miami's offshore scene, capable of blistering runs that will test your drag system and fighting skills. These torpedo-shaped predators cruise the edge of the Gulf Stream and around bait schools, typically in 80-200 feet of water. Kings are most active during spring and fall migrations when massive schools move through South Florida waters. What gets anglers hooked on king fishing is the explosive strike and the way they strip line off your reel in seconds. A good-sized king will easily hit 20-30 pounds, with occasional giants pushing 40-50 pounds showing up during peak season.
Mahi Mahi or Common Dolphinfish represent everything that's magical about offshore fishing in Miami. These electric-colored fish are drawn to floating debris, weed lines, and temperature breaks where baitfish congregate. Mahi are incredibly acrobatic fighters, launching themselves clear out of the water multiple times during a fight. They're most abundant during spring and summer months when water temperatures climb into the 80s. Beyond their spectacular aerial displays, mahi are prized for their sweet, flaky meat that's considered some of the best eating in the ocean. Schools often contain fish of various sizes, so once you locate them, multiple hookups are common.
Wahoo Fish are the Formula One cars of the offshore world, capable of speeds exceeding 60 mph and armed with razor-sharp teeth. These streamlined predators patrol the blue water beyond the reef line, often in 200+ feet of water where the Gulf Stream influence is strongest. Wahoo fishing peaks during winter months when coo
