Pompano Offshore Fishing Charters
Looking for a top-rated offshore fishing adventure that'll put you on the fish? Benny's Fishing Charters has been putting anglers onto world-class catches in Pompano waters for years, and these 4 to 8-hour trips are hands down our customer favorite. Whether you're chasing pelagics like mahi and wahoo or targeting bottom dwellers like snapper and grouper, our experienced captain knows exactly where to put you on the bite. With accommodations for up to 5 anglers, this is the perfect trip for families, groups of friends, or solo fishermen looking to get into some serious action offshore.
What to Expect on the Water
From the moment we push off the dock, you'll be heading to proven fish-holding structure and current breaks where the action happens. Our captain runs a clean operation with well-maintained tackle and all the gear you need to land trophy fish. The beauty of these longer trips is the flexibility – we can cover serious ground and adapt to what the fish are doing. Morning might start with some kite fishing for sailfish, then transition to trolling for mahi and wahoo as we work different depth ranges. When the bite slows on the surface, we'll drop down to the bottom for some heavy grouper and snapper action. The Pompano area is renowned for its diverse fishing opportunities, and these extended trips let us really capitalize on that variety.
Techniques That Produce Fish
This isn't your typical head boat experience – we're talking about a versatile fishing approach that maximizes your time on the water. Trolling is our bread and butter for covering water and finding active fish, especially when targeting fast-moving pelagics like kingfish and wahoo. Kite fishing is absolutely deadly when conditions are right, presenting live baits in the most natural way possible to attract sailfish and mahi. Deep dropping gets us down to the structure where the big grouper and tile fish live, often in 300-600 feet of water. Sport fishing techniques come into play when we're sight fishing or working specific structure, while bottom fishing lets us target the reef fish that make for great table fare. The captain reads the conditions, water temperature, and bait activity to determine which techniques will be most productive on your trip day.
Top Catches This Season
The Mahi Mahi or Common Dolphinfish are absolute crowd pleasers and one of the most exciting fish you can hook offshore. These fish are acrobatic fighters that'll jump, tail walk, and put on a show that'll have everyone on the boat cheering. Mahi typically run anywhere from 10 to 30 pounds in our area, with bull dolphins occasionally pushing 40-50 pounds. Spring through fall is prime time, especially when we find floating debris or weed lines where they like to hang. What makes mahi so special is their aggressive nature – they'll often travel in schools, so when you find one, you've usually found several. The meat is fantastic too, making them perfect for both sport and the dinner table.
Wahoo Fish are the speed demons of the deep, capable of hitting 60 mph and stripping line like you wouldn't believe. These torpedo-shaped predators typically range from 20 to 60 pounds in our waters, with the occasional monster pushing 80+ pounds. Winter months tend to be best for wahoo, when they move into our area following bait schools. The initial run on a wahoo is legendary – they'll scream line off your reel faster than almost any other fish in the ocean. Their razor-sharp teeth and incredible speed make them a true test of angling skill and tackle quality.
Swordfish represent the ultimate offshore challenge and are becoming increasingly popular on our longer trips. These magnificent fish are primarily targeted through deep dropping techniques, often in 1,200+ feet of water. Swordfish can range from 40 pounds up to several hundred pounds, making every hookup a potential fish of a lifetime. Night fishing is typically most productive for swords, though daytime deep dropping has been producing more consistently in recent years. The fight is methodical and powerful – not the fast runs of a wahoo, but a deep, steady battle that tests both angler and equipment.
Northern Kingfish are the perfect introduction to offshore fishing for newer anglers while still providing plenty of excitement for veterans. These fish are abundant, aggressive, and excellent table fare. Kings typically run 10 to 40 pounds in our area, with larger fish showing up during their seasonal migrations. They respond well to both live bait and trolled lures, making them accessible to anglers of all skill levels. The fight is strong and consistent, and they're one of the most reliable species we target.
Atlantic Sailfish are the crown jewel of South Florida sport fishing, and Pompano waters offer some of the best sailfishing on the East Coast. These magnificent billfish are pure athletes, jumping and dancing across the surface when hooked. Most sails run 6 to 8 feet long and 40 to 80 pounds, though larger fish are caught regularly. Kite fishing with live goggle eyes or pilchards is the preferred method, though they'll also hit trolled baits. Winter months, particularly December through March, offer the best sailfishing as fish migrate through our area in large numbers.
