6-Hour Offshore Fishing Trip in Port Aransas
If you're serious about offshore fishing, this 6-hour charter out of Port Aransas puts you right in the action. We're talking deep Gulf waters where the big boys hang out – marlin, tuna, and everything that makes your drag scream. Captain and crew know these waters like the back of their hand, and they'll put you on fish using whatever technique is working that day. Whether you're bringing the family or just want to get after some quality offshore species, this trip delivers the goods without all the fluff.
What to Expect on the Water
Six hours gives us plenty of time to work different areas and techniques depending on what's biting. We'll head out to the deeper structure where the big pelagics cruise, and you'll get hands-on experience with multiple fishing styles. Bottom fishing for snapper when they're stacked up, trolling spreads for marlin and mahi, and working jigs when the tuna are schooled up. The boat handles up to 6 anglers, so there's room to spread out and everyone gets their shots. Kids are absolutely welcome – there's nothing like watching a youngster battle their first big fish offshore. Plus, whatever you catch goes home with you, so you're not just fishing for photos.
Techniques & Tackle
This isn't a one-trick operation. We run the full gamut of offshore techniques because different fish want different presentations. Trolling gets the most attention since that's your bread and butter for marlin, mahi, and blackfin tuna – we'll pull a spread of lures and ballyhoo at different depths and distances. When we mark good structure or find fish on the bottom machine, we'll anchor up and drop some serious bottom rigs for snapper and amberjack. Spinning tackle comes into play when we find surface action or want to work around structure with more finesse. And when the tuna are thick, we'll break out the jigs and work them through the water column. All the gear is provided and maintained, but if you've got favorite rods or reels, bring them along.
Top Catches This Season
Greater Amberjack are the bulldogs of the reef. These fish average 20-40 pounds out here and will test every bit of your tackle and technique. They hang around wrecks and hard bottom in 80-150 feet of water, and when you hook one, it's going straight back to the structure. The fight is all about leverage and keeping steady pressure. Best action is typically spring through fall when they're most active and aggressive. What makes amberjack special is that combination of size and fight – they're not the prettiest fish, but pound for pound, few things pull harder.
Cobia are the wild cards that can make your whole day. These brown sharks (that's what some folks call them) cruise around like they own the place, often following rays or just cruising solo in the upper water column. They average 20-50 pounds, with some real giants pushing 60-plus. Peak season runs May through September when they're moving through our waters. What gets people excited about cobia is how they fight – long runs, head shakes, and they'll use every bit of water around the boat. Plus, they're fantastic eating with that firm, white meat.
Red Snapper are the bread and butter of Gulf fishing, and for good reason. These fish are beautiful, fight well for their size, and are absolutely phenomenal on the table. We target them over hard bottom and structure in 60-200 feet of water. During open season (usually June through July for federal waters), they're aggressive and will hit fresh bait dropped to the bottom. Average size runs 5-15 pounds, but we see plenty of big females that'll push 20-plus. The excitement with snapper is the consistency – when you find them, you can usually catch them.
Lane Snapper might be smaller than their red cousins, but they're scrappy little fighters that keep the action going. These colorful fish hang around the same structure as reds but are available year-round. They average 1-3 pounds, making them perfect for kids or light tackle fun. Don't let the size fool you – lane snapper are excellent eating and they bite when nothing else will. They're your insurance policy for putting fish in the box.
Blackfin Tuna are speed demons that show up when conditions are right. These fish school up around structure and temperature breaks, usually in 100-plus feet of water. They average 10-25 pounds and are built for speed with that classic tuna body style. Best fishing is typically late spring through early fall when baitfish are thick. What makes blackfins special is the combination of fight and table fare – they scream drag on light tackle and make incredible sashimi or steaks.
