What to Expect on the Water
Your fishing adventure starts the moment you step aboard our well-maintained charter boat. We've got all the gear you need – downriggers, planer boards, quality rods and reels, plus a fish finder that'll show you exactly what's swimming below. The multi-day experience gives you the luxury of really getting into the rhythm of the lake. Day one, we'll scout different areas and patterns, then use that intel to dial things in on day two. You're not just buying fishing time – you're getting an education from captains who've been reading these waters for decades. Single day trips run 5-7 hours depending on conditions and what the fish are telling us. Don't worry about experience level either. We've guided everyone from weekend warriors to tournament pros, and we'll adjust our approach to match your skill set.
Techniques and Tackle Setup
Lake Ontario fishing is all about covering water and understanding the thermocline. We run a combination of trolling techniques depending on season and target species. In spring and fall, we're often working shallow with planer boards and stick baits for browns and cohos staging near shore. Summer means going deep with downriggers, running spoons and cut bait down 60-120 feet where the kings and big lake trout cruise. Our boat's rigged with 8 rods when conditions allow, giving everyone multiple chances at hookups. We provide all tackle, but if you've got lucky lures or favorite rods, bring them along. The key to success out here is staying mobile and reading the electronics. Water temperature, bait schools, and structure changes throughout the day, so we're constantly adjusting our spread and depths to stay on active fish.
Species You'll Want to Hook
Walleye are the bread and butter of Lake Ontario, and for good reason. These fish average 3-6 pounds with plenty of 8+ pounders mixed in. Spring and fall are prime time when they're shallow and aggressive, often hitting within minutes of lines going out. They fight smart rather than hard, but that first headshake when you set the hook gets your heart pumping every time. Plus, they're hands-down the best eating fish in the lake.
Coho salmon are pure adrenaline on a fishing rod. Running 5-12 pounds on average, these silver bullets jump, run, and fight like fish twice their size. Peak season is late summer through fall when they're bulked up and ready to spawn. The bite can be absolutely insane during the coho run – we're talking multiple hookups and screaming drags. They hit both lures and cut bait, making them perfect targets for anglers who want consistent action.
Chinook salmon are the kings of Lake Ontario for a reason. These monsters regularly push 15-25 pounds, with 30+ pounders caught every season. Summer is your best shot at a true trophy king, when they're deep and fat from gorging on alewives. The fight is legendary – long powerful runs that test your drag and endurance. Many anglers consider landing a big chinook from Lake Ontario a bucket list achievement.
Brown trout might be the most beautiful fish we target, with their golden sides and aggressive attitudes. They range from 3-15 pounds and are notorious for being moody. Some days they want flashy spoons, other days only the most natural presentation works. Fall browns are especially exciting as they move shallow to spawn, often providing heart-stopping action in relatively shallow water. They're also incredibly smart fish that will humble even experienced anglers.
