8-Hour Sturgeon Fishing Adventure
Looking for a real fishing challenge that'll test your skills and patience? Our full-day sturgeon trip puts you right where these ancient giants feed and fight. We're talking about fish that have been around since the dinosaurs – and they haven't gotten any easier to catch. With eight solid hours on the water and our experienced captain leading the charge, you'll have the best shot at landing one of these prehistoric powerhouses. Plus, we can bring on a second captain as deck hand if your group wants to bring more than six anglers aboard our spacious party barge.
What to Expect on the Water
This isn't your typical half-day fishing trip where you're rushing to get lines wet and back to shore. Eight hours gives us the luxury of time – time to find the fish, time to wait them out, and time to really work the productive spots when we find them. Our party barge setup is perfect for sturgeon fishing since these battles can go on for a while, and you'll want that stable platform under your feet. The captain knows exactly where these fish like to hang out, from the deeper holes where they rest during the day to the feeding flats they cruise when conditions are right. We'll anchor up in prime spots and let the sturgeon come to us, because that's how you do it right. With up to six anglers (or more with our optional second captain), everyone gets plenty of room to spread out and fish without crossing lines.
Gear Setup & Techniques
Sturgeon fishing is all about heavy tackle and patience. We're talking serious rods and reels that can handle fish pushing triple digits in weight. The captain will have everything rigged and ready – heavy sinkers to hold bottom in the current, circle hooks that won't gut-hook these protected fish, and leaders strong enough to handle their sandpaper-rough skin. Most of the day you'll be bottom fishing with cut bait, letting those rigs soak while you watch your rod tips for that telltale bounce that means a sturgeon just picked up your offering. When one does hit, it's game on. These fish are pure muscle and they know how to use the current to their advantage. The fight might last twenty minutes or more, with long powerful runs that'll make your drag sing. Our deck setup gives everyone room to move around the fighting angler, and with the optional second captain acting as deck hand, you'll have extra help with the net and photo ops.
Target Species You'll Want to Hook
Sturgeon are living fossils that have roamed our rivers for over 200 million years, and once you hook into one, you'll understand why they've survived so long. These armored giants can live over 100 years and grow to massive sizes – we're talking fish that can stretch six feet or more and weigh well over 100 pounds. What makes them so special to target is their incredible fighting ability combined with their prehistoric appearance. They've got those distinctive bony plates called scutes running down their sides, a shark-like tail, and four barbels hanging from their snout that they use to vacuum up food from the bottom. Sturgeon are bottom feeders that cruise along sucking up everything from worms to small fish, which is why we fish cut bait right on the bottom. The best bite often happens during moving water, especially on the incoming tide when they're actively feeding. Spring through fall gives you the best shot at these monsters, though each season brings different opportunities. What every angler loves about sturgeon is that they fight clean – no jumping or head shaking, just pure bulldogging power that'll test your tackle and your endurance. Plus, they're incredibly photogenic fish that make for amazing grip-and-grin shots before we release them to fight another day.
