Don't worry about bringing anything but yourself and maybe some snacks – all the tackle, bait, and gear are included in your trip.
What to Expect on the Water
Your morning starts at the Boynton Beach Inlet, where Captain Matt will have the boat fueled, rigged, and ready to roll. The ride out to the fishing grounds takes about 20-30 minutes, giving you time to get comfortable with the boat and talk game plan. We'll be working in 80 to 400 feet of water, depending on what's biting and where the current is setting up best. The 21' Sportsman is built for this kind of fishing – stable enough for families with kids but nimble enough to chase down a hot bite when the fish are really going off. With space for up to 4 anglers, everyone gets plenty of room to fish without getting tangled up in each other's lines. Captain Matt knows these waters like the back of his hand, from the shallow reefs to the drop-offs where the big pelagics cruise.
Trolling Tactics & Gear Setup
Most of your fishing will be done trolling, which is hands-down the most effective way to cover water and find feeding fish offshore. We'll have a spread of 4-6 lines out, mixing ballyhoo, artificial lures, and maybe some live bait if we can catch it fresh. The boat's equipped with quality rods and reels that can handle everything from a screaming Wahoo to a jumping Sailfish. If you've never trolled before, don't sweat it – Captain Matt will walk you through everything from how to hold the rod to fighting technique. When we mark bait or structure on the fish finder, we might switch things up and do some vertical jigging or live bait fishing. The key is staying flexible and adapting to what the fish want on any given day. Water temperature, current direction, and bait movement all play into where we'll set up and what techniques work best.
Top Catches This Season
Atlantic Sailfish are the crown jewel of South Florida offshore fishing, and Boynton Beach sits right in the heart of prime Sailfish territory. These incredible gamefish typically run 6-8 feet long and put on an aerial display that'll get your heart pumping. Peak Sailfish season runs from December through April when cooler water temperatures bring them close to shore. What makes Sailfish so special isn't just their acrobatic fight – it's the way they hunt in packs, often following the bait schools. When you hook one, there's a good chance his buddies are still around, which can lead to some epic multiple hookups. Most anglers practice catch and release with Sailfish, making for great photos and conservation.
King Mackerel, or "Kings" as we call them locally, are year-round residents that provide consistent action and excellent table fare. These torpedo-shaped predators average 15-30 pounds in our waters, with the occasional smoker pushing 40-plus pounds during the cooler months. Kings are aggressive feeders that will absolutely destroy a properly presented live bait or trolled lure. They're known for their blistering initial runs and acrobatic jumps, making them a favorite among anglers who want both a great fight and a great meal. The best King fishing typically happens from September through March when the water cools down and bigger fish move closer to shore.
Mahi Mahi, also called Dolphinfish or Dorado, are arguably the most beautiful fish swimming in our offshore waters. These vibrant gold and green gamefish are incredibly acrobatic and provide non-stop action once you locate a school. Mahi typically show up in our area from April through October, often around floating debris, weed lines, or anywhere small baitfish are concentrated. They're schooling fish, so where you catch one, you'll usually find more. What really sets Mahi apart is their willingness to eat just about anything – live bait, dead bait, lures, jigs – they're not particularly picky. Plus, they're absolutely delicious on the dinner table, making them a perfect fish for families looking to bring home a fresh catch.
Wahoo are the speed demons of the offshore world, capable of hitting 60+ mph and taking line off your reel faster than you thought possible. These sleek predators average 20-40 pounds in our waters and are most active during the cooler months from November through March. Wahoo are notorious for their razor-sharp teeth and lightning-fast strikes, often hitting trolled lures so hard they'll nearly pull the rod out of your hands. They're excellent eating fish with firm, white meat that's perfect for grilling or searing. The challenge with Wahoo is their unpredictability – they might be thick one day and completely absent the next, which keeps things interesting and makes every hookup feel like a victory.
