Your day starts before sunrise at the marina, where you'll meet your captain and get the rundown on safety and game plan. We'll cruise out past the nearshore reefs into the deeper Gulf waters where the big boys hang out – usually 15-30 miles offshore depending on conditions and what's biting. The ride out takes about 45 minutes to an hour, giving you time to rig up and get pumped for the day ahead. Once we hit our first spot, it's game on. Your captain knows these waters like the back of his hand and will put you on structure, ledges, and drop-offs where fish are actively feeding. With 8 full hours, we've got time to move around and find the bite if one spot goes cold. The boat is equipped with all the heavy tackle you need for bottom fishing, plus lighter gear if we get into some surface action. Expect to fish in 80-200 feet of water targeting different species at various depths throughout the day.
We'll be doing a mix of bottom fishing and trolling depending on conditions and what's showing up on the fish finder. For bottom fishing, we use heavy conventional reels loaded with 50-80 pound test, perfect for pulling big snappers and groupers off the bottom before they can cut you off in the rocks. Circle hooks are the name of the game here – they hook fish in the corner of the mouth and reduce gut hooking, which is crucial for conservation. We'll anchor up on productive ledges and artificial reefs, dropping down fresh cut bait and live bait when we can get it. If the surface bite is on, we'll break out the trolling gear and pull spreader bars and big plugs for King Mackerel and Mahi. The captain will call the shots on technique based on what the fish are telling us. All rods, reels, tackle, and bait are included, but feel free to bring your lucky rod if you've got one. Just make sure it can handle big Gulf fish – this isn't pond fishing.

Their dorsal fins have 11 spines mixed with 16-18 rays while their anal fins have 3 spins with a mix of 10-12 rays.</p><p>Female Gag Groupers are normally pale or medium grey in color. Their bodies have a more <i>marbled</i> appearance due to the wavy patterns covering their bodies. But the best way to tell a female and a male apart is through the dorsal fin. Unlike female Gag Groupers, a male Gag Grouper’s dorsal fin is reticulated. Color-wise however, they are also darker than female Gag Groupers. Gag Groupers like hiding so, they would make use of any structure that can serve as shelter. Young Gag Groupers prefer staying inshore and in shoals until they mature. Older Gag Groupers loiter around offshore reefs and shipwrecks. Usually, when fishing for Gag Groupers, they are usually accompanied by Kingfish and Spanish Mackerel. At times, they’re also accompanied by Blacktip and Spinner Sharks. They’re found chasing herrings that swarm near the beach.</p><p>Others advise looking for stone crab traps. Since Gag Groupers love crab, they’ll most likely go to a place where crabs hide.</p><p>When it comes to bait choice, Gag Groupers love live bait. They prefer mullet and pinfish. However, some anglers have reported having success with also cut bait like octopus, squid, and crabs. Other options include using Pilchards, Cigar Minnows, and Grunts. </p><p>For your equipment, it depends on where you are. In Florida, you’re required to use a circle hook when going bottom fishing. Its body has three indistinct broad dark stripes, and a pale streak on its chin. The upper part of their eye is blue. There are occasionally some small blue spots and lines on the upper parts of its body and the dorsal fins and sometimes white spots and lines on the lower areas.
