Offshore Fishing Charters Georgia
Nothing beats the rush of hauling in a monster fish from Georgia's deep blue waters. When you book with Double Down Fishing Charters, you're signing up for a proper offshore adventure that takes you anywhere from 20 to 70 miles out into some of the most productive fishing grounds along the Georgia coast. We've got six spots on each charter, so you'll have plenty of room to work without bumping elbows with other anglers. Whether you're a weekend warrior or someone who lives and breathes saltwater fishing, our captains know exactly where to put you on the fish.
What to Expect on the Water
Once we clear the inlet and hit open water, the real fun begins. Our fishing strategy depends on what Mother Nature gives us that day – when conditions are right, we'll run trolling patterns to hunt down fast-moving pelagics, then anchor up on productive reefs and wrecks for some serious bottom fishing action. The artificial structures and natural ledges we fish hold incredible numbers of snapper, grouper, and other reef species that'll keep your rod bent all day long. Our captains have been working these waters for years and know every bump, wreck, and reef that holds fish. You'll spend your day switching between different techniques, which keeps things interesting and maximizes your chances of filling the cooler with quality fish.
Gear and Techniques
We've got all your tackle sorted – heavy conventional reels spooled with braided line for bottom fishing, and lighter spinning gear when the situation calls for it. When we're trolling, we'll pull a spread of lures and live bait behind the boat at different depths and distances to cover water efficiently and target wahoo, barracuda, and cobia. For bottom fishing, we use circle hooks with fresh cut bait or live offerings to tempt snapper and grouper off the structure. The key to success out here is reading the electronics, understanding current flow, and knowing when to switch tactics. Our tackle boxes are stocked with everything from heavy jigs and large circle hooks to wire leaders for toothy critters. Don't worry about bringing anything – we supply rods, reels, tackle, bait, ice, and even handle your fishing licenses so you can focus on what matters most.
Top Catches This Season
Wahoo are the speed demons of the offshore world, and Georgia's waters produce some absolute rockets. These fish can hit 60 mph and will scream line off your reel like nothing else. Most of our wahoo come on high-speed trolling with diving plugs or strip baits, and they typically run 20 to 40 pounds, though we see bigger ones every season. The bite is usually best during cooler months when water temperatures drop and baitfish are abundant.
Great barracuda are another favorite target that'll test your drag system. These aggressive predators patrol the reefs and wrecks we fish, and they're not shy about crushing a well-presented bait. Barracuda average 10 to 20 pounds in our area, with occasional fish pushing 30 pounds or more. They're fantastic on light tackle and make excellent table fare when prepared properly. Look for them around structure during warmer months when they're most active.
Cobia are the bulldogs of the offshore scene – thick, powerful fish that'll give you a workout from the moment they grab your bait. These brown sharks, as some folks call them, love hanging around structure and floating debris. Spring and early summer are prime time for cobia, when they're moving through our waters in good numbers. A 30-pound cobia is standard, but we regularly see fish in the 40 to 50-pound range that'll really put you to work.
Red snapper represent the gold standard of bottom fishing, and when they're in season, there's nothing better than loading up on these crimson beauties. They stack up on hard bottom and artificial reefs anywhere from 60 to 120 feet of water. Red snapper are smart fish that require finesse – light leaders, sharp hooks, and fresh bait make all the difference. Most run 5 to 15 pounds, but trophy fish over 20 pounds show up regularly on our trips.
Gag grouper are the heavyweights of the reef, and landing a big gag is something every angler remembers. These fish use structure to their advantage, trying to cut you off or wrap you around whatever cover they can find. Gag grouper fishing requires heavy tackle and quick reflexes – once you feel that thump, you've got to lean into them hard and keep their heads up. During their peak season, we target gags around rocky ledges and artificial reefs where they ambush smaller fish.
