Key West Morning Half-Day Fishing Charter
There's nothing quite like getting on the water early when the fish are biting and the day is fresh. Our morning half-day fishing trips with Down Low Sportfishing give you four solid hours to work the productive waters around Key West without eating up your whole day. We're talking about some of the best fishing grounds in the Keys, where the Atlantic meets the Gulf and creates perfect conditions for multiple species. You'll be casting lines by 7:30 a.m. and back at the dock by 11:30 a.m., giving you plenty of time to clean your catch and maybe grab lunch in town. This trip works great for families, couples, or small groups of friends who want to experience world-class fishing without the commitment of a full day on the water.
What to Expect on the Water
We keep our groups small at just four anglers max, which means you get personal attention and plenty of room to fish comfortably. The morning bite around Key West is legendary – that's when the water temperature is stable and baitfish are active, bringing in the predators we're targeting. Our captain knows these waters like the back of his hand and will adjust the game plan based on current conditions, season, and what's been biting lately. Some mornings we'll head to the reef for grouper and snapper, other days we might work the flats for permit and tarpon, or run offshore for tuna. The beauty of a half-day trip is we can cover different spots and techniques depending on what Mother Nature gives us. Don't worry about experience level – whether you're a seasoned angler or holding a rod for the first time, we'll get you hooked up.
Techniques & Tackle We Use
Our approach changes with the target species and conditions, but we come prepared for everything. For bottom fishing over the reef, we'll use conventional reels with circle hooks and enough weight to get down through the current to where the grouper and snapper live. When we're working the flats for permit and tarpon, it's all about live bait and light tackle – crabs for permit and pilchards or mullet for tarpon. If we head offshore for blackfin tuna, we'll troll with small feathers and spoons at different depths until we find the school. All rods, reels, tackle, and bait are included, and we use quality gear that can handle anything from a scrappy mutton snapper to a jumping tarpon. We'll show you the proper techniques for each species – how to work a jig on the bottom, how to present live bait to cruising permit, or how to fight a fish without burning your arms out. The boat is equipped with outriggers, downriggers, and all the electronics needed to find fish efficiently.
Top Catches This Season
Blackfin tuna are the speed demons of our local waters, typically running 10-25 pounds and fighting way above their weight class. These fish school up offshore in 100-300 feet of water and when you find them, the action can be non-stop. They hit trolled baits hard and make blistering runs that will test your drag system. Best time to target them is early morning when they're feeding on the surface, which makes them perfect for our half-day schedule. Tarpon are the silver kings and the fish that put Key West on the angling map. These prehistoric fighters can range from 40 pounds up to over 150 pounds, and they're famous for their aerial displays when hooked. We see them year-round, but May through July is prime time when the big migratory fish move through. Even a medium-sized tarpon will give you a 30-minute fight you'll never forget.
Permit are considered the holy grail of flats fishing – spooky, smart, and incredibly selective about what they eat. These disc-shaped fighters average 15-30 pounds and are notorious for testing an angler's patience and skill. They cruise the shallow flats looking for crabs and will spook at the slightest wrong move. Landing one is a badge of honor in the fishing community. Mutton snapper are gorgeous fish with their red and yellow coloration and provide excellent table fare. They hang around the reef structure in 30-80 feet of water and can reach impressive sizes, with fish over 10 pounds being fairly common. They're smart fish that require finesse – too heavy a leader and they won't bite, too light and they'll break you off in the coral. Black grouper are the bulldogs of the reef, using their powerful bodies and big mouths to inhale anything that looks edible. These ambush predators hide in holes and ledges, waiting for baitfish to swim by. A big black grouper will try to get back to its hole immediately after being hooked, so you need to turn them quick and keep steady pressure.
