Charter Fishing Florida | Private Tarpon Trip
Looking for the fishing trip of a lifetime? Captain Lucas Engel's private 6-hour tarpon charter puts you right in the heart of Florida's legendary tarpon season. Running from May 1st through June 20th, this is when these silver kings are most active in our waters, and honestly, there's nothing quite like feeling that first explosive jump when you hook into one of these beasts. You'll launch at 8:00 AM when the bite is prime, giving you and one fishing buddy the entire boat to yourselves for a world-class angling experience.
What to Expect on the Water
This isn't just about tarpon – though landing one of these 100+ pound silver missiles is definitely the crown jewel. Captain Lucas knows exactly where to find them during peak season, but he's also got backup plans that'll keep your rods bent all day. Between tarpon runs, you'll target snook lurking around structure, redfish cruising the flats, gag grouper holding on ledges, and spotted seatrout scattered throughout the grass beds. The 6-hour window gives you plenty of time to work different spots and adapt to what the fish are doing that day. Every trip is different – some days the tarpon are rolling on the surface at first light, other days they show up mid-morning when the bait moves in. Captain Lucas reads the water like a book and adjusts the game plan accordingly.
Light Tackle Techniques
We're talking pure light tackle fishing here – the kind that separates the weekend warriors from serious anglers. You'll be throwing live bait on spinning gear, working plugs along the mangroves, and presenting baits in the strike zone with finesse. For tarpon, we use circle hooks with live crabs, pilchards, or threadfin herring, depending on what they're feeding on. The light tackle makes every fish feel like a monster, especially when you're wrestling a 150-pound tarpon that's cartwheeling through the air. Snook fishing means working the shadows with live shrimp or pinfish, while redfish respond to cut bait fished near oyster bars and grass edges. Captain Lucas provides all the gear, but if you've got a favorite rod setup, bring it along – just make sure your drag is smooth because these fish will test every component.

Species You'll Want to Hook
Tarpon are the undisputed kings of Florida's inshore waters, and May through mid-June is when they're most concentrated along our coast. These prehistoric giants can live over 80 years and grow to 200+ pounds, but it's their acrobatic fights that make them legendary. When you hook a tarpon, expect multiple jumps – sometimes 6 or 7 times completely out of the water – followed by powerful runs that'll have your arms burning. They're catch-and-release only, which makes that grip-and-grin photo even more special. The best part? Florida's tarpon population is healthy and these fish show up like clockwork every spring.
Snook are Florida's signature gamefish for good reason – they're smart, aggressive, and absolutely beautiful. During tarpon season, snook are in their pre-spawn phase, feeding heavily around mangroves, docks, and bridge pilings. They're ambush predators with that distinctive black lateral line and can grow over 30 inches in our waters. What makes snook special is their explosive strike and bulldogging fight style. They'll head straight for structure trying to cut you off, which keeps you on your toes every time you hook one.
Redfish are the workhorses of the flats, and they're active year-round in Florida. These copper-colored bruisers love shallow water and can be sight-fished when conditions are right. Reds are known for their powerful runs and stubborn fighting style – they don't jump, but they'll pull drag for what feels like forever. During late spring, they're often found in schools around oyster bars and grass flats, making for some fantastic action when you find a good concentration.
Gag grouper add some bottom fishing variety to your trip, especially when working deeper structure between flats. These fish are excellent table fare and put up a solid fight, trying to get back to their rocky hideouts once hooked. Spring is prime time for gag grouper before they head offshore to spawn, and Captain Lucas knows the specific spots where they congregate.
Spotted seatrout are the most reliable species you'll encounter, scattered throughout grass beds and often mixed in with other species. Don't let their abundance fool you – a big gator trout over 20 inches is a trophy fish that fights surprisingly well on light tackle. They're also excellent eating, making them a customer favorite for anglers who want to
